TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team snapped Delaware's seven-game Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) winning streak with a 4-3 victory in game one of the Saturday doubleheader, falling in game two 5-4 for a split on the day.
Towson (13-24, 3-8 CAA) came back from down two after four in game one against its first-place league opponent, capped by a two-run triple from
Cori Jones to win in the first contest. Towson led 3-1 after four innings in game two off a two-run home run by
Sydni Byers, but Delaware (25-12, 8-3 CAA) took back the lead with three in the fifth. Towson tied it in the sixth, but the Blue Hens retook the lead in the seventh and held for the win.
Key Stats:
- Sydni Byers combined to hit 3-for-4 in the games, having a home run, a double and a hit-by-pitch. Chloe Poulich was 3-for-6 with a hit-by-pitch and scoring twice, including the tying run late in game two. Cori Jones had the go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth of game one, going 1-for-4 with a walk and hit-by-pitch.
- On the mound, Julia Jackson (10-10) earned a complete game victory in the first contest, going seven innings with three runs and a strikeout. In game two, Madeline Harris had the start, not getting a decision with three runs, just two earned, and a strikeout in four innings. Jackson came in relief and got the loss with three innings and two runs.
- For Delaware, Hanna Garber combined to go 4-for-9 with a triple, double and three runs. Graceyn Frost (11-4) had the loss in game one in relief, having a run surrendered in the sixth inning, and did not decision in her game two start with four innings, three runs and three strikeouts. Emily Winburn (11-6) no-decisioned in her game one start on five innings, three runs and four strikeouts, later winning game two in relief on 1.2 scoreless innings.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Delaware got off to a fast start in the opening inning with a two-run home run by Brooke Glanden to put the visitors up 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Towson loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly from Madyson Peters made the score 2-1 Delaware.
- Julia Jackson pitched two scoreless innings to hold the deficit to one. In the fourth, a walk and two singles led to a run as Delaware led 3-1.
- Towson looked to chip away in the fifth. Sydni Byers and Gracyn Houmis hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Rylee Penrod got Towson a run and made it 3-2 Delaware.
- Next inning, Chloe Poulich got hit by a pitch to lead off, then Peters singled to put two runners on. Cori Jones flew a ball down the right field line for a bases-clearing triple, giving Towson a 4-3 lead.
- Delaware had a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to get a runner in scoring position. Jackson induced a line out and fly out to send Towson to a 4-3 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- Again Delaware notched hits in the opening inning for an early lead: Hanna Garber singled and took second on a throwing error. A Brittney Mendoza double allowed Garber to score for a 1-0 Delaware lead.
- A pitching duel commenced as the score remained 1-0 after the top of the fourth. Towson finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, using a Mackenzie Lake double and Chloe Poulich single to get runners to the corners. Madyson Peters punched a single through the left side to tie the game. After a double play made it one runner on, Sydni Byers sent a ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run and a 3-1 Towson advantage.
- Delaware got the lead back in the next half-inning. Delaware began with a triple, RBI single and a walk. Following a fielder's choice, a Kailey Christian double tied the game, then a Jayla Brooks pinch hit sacrifice fly gave Delaware a 4-3 lead.
- The bottom of the sixth proved helpful for Towson as Poulich singled to lead off and got all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next pitch went wild as Poulich scored to tie the game at 4-4.
- Delaware loaded the bases with one away in the top of the seventh. Julia Jackson induced a fielder's choice to get an out at home, but the next batter walked to push a run home for a 5-4 Delaware lead. Lake reached on a error with two outs in the bottom half but did not score as Delaware got the win 5-4.
Inside the Numbers:
- Towson's victory in game one ended Delaware's seven-game winning streak in league play.
- Briana Ramirez's 11-game hitting streak was snapped in game two vs. Delaware. Chloe Poulich and Madyson Peters have hit safely in their last four games.
