Towson Softball Falls in CAA Series Finale vs. Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team looked to take the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series vs. Delaware on Sunday following a Saturday doubleheader split but fell to the Blue Hens 15-4 in five innings.

Towson (13-25, 3-9 CAA) fell behind early to Delaware (26-12, 9-3 CAA) and could not come back despite scoring four runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings.

Key Stats:
  • Chloe Poulich earned a multi-hit game in her second consecutive contest, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.  Mackenzie Lake had a solo home run for Towson in the fourth, finishing 1-for-3.
  • The loss went to Julia Jackson (10-11), who had six runs, just five earned, and a strikeout in her three-inning start.
  • For Delaware, Brittney Mendoza combined for a 2-for-4 game, hitting a home run and double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Emily Winburn (12-6) took the win on the circle, going four innings with two runs and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Three batters into the first, Brittney Mendoza hit a three-run home run to take an early lead.
  • Towson threatened in the bottom half of the first, putting two on with two out via Briana Ramirez single and Chloe Poulich reaching on a dropped line drive by the shortstop, but the Tigers did not score.
  • Delaware added three more in the third, including a two-run home run by Morgan Olynyk, and seven more in the fourth, off a combined eight hits, to go up 13-0.
  • Mackenzie Lake led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left to get Towson on the board.  Chloe Poulich followed with a laser down the right field line for a triple.  Three batters later, Sydni Byers hit a double to left, scoring Poulich to make it 13-2 Delaware.
  • Delaware added two more in the fifth off an Emily White two-run triple.  Towson looked to come back, beginning with a Nicole Kidwiler one-out triple to the left-center gap.  Ramirez sent a pitch through the left side for a single to score Kidwiler.  Towson loaded the bases and got another run on a Jess DaBreo sacrifice fly, but Delaware held the rest of the way for a 15-4 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Briana Ramirez has hit safely in 12 of her last 13 games.  Her .387 batting average is third in the CAA.
