Men’s Lacrosse Comeback Bid Falls One Short at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Making a three-goal run with just over two minutes to make it a one-goal game, the Towson University men's lacrosse team came up just short of a comeback, falling 11-10 on the road at the University of Delaware on Saturday.

Towson (5-7, 2-1 CAA) dropped its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game of the season at Delaware Stadium. Kyle Berkeley finished with four points, scoring a hat trick for a second-straight game. James Avanzato finished with two goals and one assist while Jonathan Bender notched back-to-back goals. Shane Brennan made 13 saves, including seven in the second half.

Delaware (7-5, 1-2 CAA) won its third-straight over Towson, picking up 17 saves from Matt Kilkeary, including nine in the third quarter. Mark Bieda scored three goals with two assists for a game-high five points. Mike Robinson added two goals.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Swain scored 42 seconds in on a feed from Josh Webber, his first helper of the year.
  • The Tigers extended the lead on a Berkley goal, shaking off his defender and scoring five hole. Swain and Berkeley each extended point streaks to five goals with their respective goals.
  • Delaware got back-to-back goals from Tye Kurtz with 2:32 to play in the first and Joe Speers 18 seconds into the second quarter, tying the game at 2-2.
  • Avanzato ripped a shot to the far post with 14:07 to go in the quarter, getting a feed from linemate Luke Shilling for a 3-2 Towson lead.
  • Delaware scored four-straight goals over the final 14 minutes of the half, surging to a 6-3 lead. Robinson scored twice, book-ending a Mark Bieda goal. Nick Jessen got the final goal of the half with just under five minutes to play, giving Delaware the 6-3 edge at the break.
  • Delaware carried its run to five goals with Drew Lenkaitis scoring at 13:14. Towson snapped its cold streak as Avanzato buried his second of the day, capitalizing on a 6-on-4 man-up. Bieda scored again at 10:20 for an 8-4 Delaware lead.
  • Luke Shilling got his first of the day on a turn-around jumper with two flags down, getting an assist from Avanzato. Delaware's Cam Acchione put the Blue Hens' lead back to 9-5 on a crease-side feed from Bieda, the final goal of the quarter.
  • Bender scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter, leading with a high bouncer and then scoring a worm burner. Chop Gallagher had the assist on the first goal while the second goal was unassisted, trimming Delaware's lead to 9-7.
  • The Blue Hens scored twice in transition to regain a four-goal, 11-7 lead. Bieda scored the first while JP Ward finished on the doorstep on a Kurtz feed.
  • Towson made a run at it with just over two minutes to play. Berkeley scored back-to-back goals at 2:19 and 1:42, both unassisted.
  • Gallagher made it a one-goal game with 1:07 to play, getting the dish from Berkeley. The Tigers had one last chance at tying the game with 6.3 seconds left, but could not find the back of the net.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson picked up a four-point game from Berkeley, who had a hand in Towson's final three goals in the comeback attempt. Avanzato added two goals and one assist, taking 11 shots.
  • Towson out-shot the Blue Hens 47-32, but were stymied by Kilkeary until the fourth quarter, scoring five times in the final frame.
  • Rookie faceoff man Matt Constantinides went 14-of-25 at the X, adding another 11 ground balls to his credit. The freshman won seven of the eight faceoffs in the crucial fourth quarter.
  • Garrett Zungailia caused three turnovers and played a key part in Towson's 19-of-22 clearing efforts.
  • Both teams went one-for-two on the power play. Avanzato scored for the Tigers on a 6-on-4 man-up situation.
  • Delaware has won three straight over the Tigers, dating back to last season. It is the first time since the 1960s Towson has dropped three straight to the Blue Hens.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers take to the road for the last time in the regular season, heading to the Nutmeg State next Saturday.
  • Towson takes on Fairfield University at 3:30 p.m. at Rafferty Stadium. The Tigers and Stags clash after a women's lacrosse game.
