Women’s Lacrosse Wins Second-Straight in Overtime

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. Gabby Garrett led the Towson University women's lacrosse team to a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) overtime win over Hofstra Saturday afternoon, 11-10.  

The victory marks the second consecutive overtime win for Towson and its third contest in a row to go to extra time.  


Toward the end of the first overtime period, Blair Pearre won the draw control to give the Tigers possession. With 1:54 left, Garrett got around the defender and scored with 1:54 left in overtime to secure the 11-10 win for Towson.  


Kerri Liucci and Milana Zizakovic each scored three goals to tie their own career highs. Pearre and Garrett added two scores a piece while Kerri Thornton also found the back of the net.  


Pearre, former Under Armour All-American, has scored at least two goals in 30 of 36 games at the collegiate level. She also moved up to 13
th on the program's top 20 scoring list with 105 career goals. 

The Tigers won the draw control battle, 14-12. Pearre led the way with seven draws to bring her career total to 149. She currently ranks fifth in program history. Thornton also added five draw controls. 


Erin Williams (4) and Olivia Malamphy (3) led the team in ground balls while Thornton caused two turnovers.

How it Happened    
  • Kerri Liucci got things going for Towson with the first score of the day at 11:27. Hofstra answered with two early goals to take the 2-1 lead.  
  • The Tigers then went on a three-goal run to retake the 4-3 edge. Zizakovic scored back-to-back goals in the stretch as well as a free-position goal from Pearre.  
  • The Pride came back to tally two goals to tie the score back up, 4-4. With 2:33 remaining in the first half, Liucci recorded her second goal to put her team ahead, 5-4. However, 59 seconds later, Hofstra found the back of the net to tie up the score before halftime, 5-5.  
  •  Towson took a 7-5 lead early in the third quarter as Pearre and Kerri Liuci scored successive goals at 12:36 and 11:29, both unassisted. 
  • Hofstra surged and took an 8-7 lead on the back of a three-goal burst from Katie Whelan, Lauren Colleti on the power play, and Erin Demek. 
  • Kerri Thornton and Zizakovic put Towson back on top with a 9-8 lead with goals a minute apart at 1:59 and 1:33 of the third quarter.
  • The Pride tied the game again at 9-9 with 93 seconds left in the quarter on a Whelan tally.
  • Towson took a lead again at 10:40 of the final quarter as Garrett gave the Tigers a 10-9 advantage. But the Pride scored with 3:43 to go on Whelan's third of the half, forcing overtime for a third-straight game for the Tigers.
  • With 1:54 to go in overtime, Garrett provided the heroics for Towson, scoring the deciding goal and pushing Towson to back-to-back overtime wins.

  • Zizakovic and Kerri Liucci chipped in three goals apiece while Pearre added a pair. Garrett posted two goals, including the overtime game-winning goal.
  • Carly Merlo made nine saves in her 64 minutes of work, including one in overtime. 
  • Towson figured out Hofstra's netminder, Jess Smith, who made eight saves in the first half but just three over the final 34 minutes of action.
  • The Tigers held a narrow 19-18 advantage in ground balls while winning 14 of the games 26 draws. Pearre grabbed seven draw controls while also going 2-for-4 on free position shots. Kerri Liucci was 1-for-1.
Next Game 
Up next, Towson will take the following week off from competition. The team will get back on the field to host William & Mary on Wednesday, April 27 at 5 p.m. before ending the regular season with a short trip to Delaware on Saturday, April 30 for a 12 p.m. game.
