Towson Baseball Comeback Attempt Just Short at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team nearly came back from down five with a three-run sixth and the bases loaded in the eighth but came up just short in an 8-6 defeat at UNCW on Sunday afternoon.
 
Towson (9-26, 0-9 CAA) scored in three consecutive innings in its attempt to come back at UNCW (21-13, 6-3 CAA), pulling to within two and having the potential tying run on second base in the eighth, but could not bridge the final gap.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson hit two home runs in the game in the third inning, including one by Elijah Dickerson, who hit 2-for-5 with two runs scored.  James Moses hit the other Towson home run, going 1-for-4 with a walk.
  • Towson starter Nick Janowicz (2-5) got the loss with three innings, seven runs and two strikeouts.  The Towson bullpen combined to throw five innings with one run and four strikeouts, including two scoreless innings from Jake Pecilunas in the seventh and eighth, adding two strikeouts.
  • For UNCW, John Newton tallied up a 1-for-2 day with a home run, two runs, two RBI and three walks.  Starter Zane Taylor did not decision, going 4.2 innings with three runs and four strikeouts.  The victory was awarded to Cole Benton (2-1), who pitched three outs in the sixth without a run, with Hunter Hodges getting his fifth save with 1.2 scoreless innings pitched, striking out two.
How It Happened:
  • UNCW got two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first.  Matt Suggs grounded a ball down the left field line for a two-run double and a 2-0 home team lead.
  • In the third, a leadoff single was followed by a two-run home run to right-center by John Newton for UNCW.  The Seahawks led 4-0 after three.
  • Towson increased the power in the top of the fourth.  James Moses led off with a home run to right, then two batters later, Elijah Dickerson notched a solo home run to the same spot, making the score 4-2 UNCW.
  • UNCW rebuilt the lead in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a Jac Croom solo home run.  A proceeded single and double added another run.  Following a bunt single, Nolan Bolt induced a ground ball double play, but another run scored on that play to put the score at 7-2 UNCW.
  • Towson got a run back in the next half-inning.  Max Samson singled to center and took second two batters later on a ground out.  Danny Becerra grounded a single through the left side to score Samson and make it 7-3 UNCW.  UNCW got the run back, using a fifth inning Jack Howell RBI double to be up 8-3.
  • Towson got the bats going in the sixth, getting two on via single and walk. The runners advanced on a pair of wild pitches to score Dickerson, then after a Nolan Young walk, Chandler Castleberry ripped a ball up the middle for an RBI single.  Two batters later, Samson got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jordan Peyton hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run and pull Towson within two at 8-6 UNCW.
  • The Tigers threatened to take the lead in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with walks.  Moses took the ball 320 feet to right field but just came short of the wall for a fly out.  UNCW held for the 8-6 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jake Pecilunas made his 97th career pitching appearance for Towson to increase his program record.
  • Elijah Dickerson combined to hit .400 in the series with two home runs and four RBI.

Towson returns to Schuerholz Park on Tuesday, April 19 for a rematch against Maryland at 3 p.m.
