Men’s Lacrosse Powers Past Drexel in League Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Seven lead changes. Six ties. Two huge saves.

The Towson University men's lacrosse team came out with a big 13-12 win over longtime rival Drexel University, erasing a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to pick up the Tigers' first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) wins of the season.

Towson (4-6, 1-0 CAA) got 16 saves from redshirt senior Shane Brennan, including two in the final minute of the game, including a doorstep save with 12 seconds to play. James Avanzato had a career-best four goals while freshman faceoff specialist had a career day himself, winning 21 of the game's 29 draws.

Drexel (4-5, 0-1 CAA) had a five-goal day from Ryan Genord while Jack Mulcahy added two goals as the Dragons accounted for seven goals from the starting midfielders. The Dragons split time in goal, with Ross Blumenthal starting and making seven saves while Drew McGill made four, suffering the loss.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game as Azavanto tagged his first of the day in transition with defensive midfielder Brandon Hund assisting.
  • Drexel scored back-to-back goals from Mulcahy and Genord to take a 2-1 lead, but the Tigers tied the game on Avanzato's second of the day. The senior finished a chaos play in front for a 2-2 score.
  • The Dragons scored three straight for a 5-2 lead from Genord, Casey Waller and Aidan Coll.
  • Towson pulled back within one thanks to Avanzato's third of the day, followed by a transition goal from another defensive midfielder, Reece Potter, to open the second quarter.
  • Drexel retook a three-goal lead at 7-4 from Max Semple and Sean Donnelly, but again Towson scored back to back. Close defenseman Koby Smith scored another transition goal for the Tigers before Nick DeMaio stung a power play goal with Swain on the feed.
  • Towson tied the game at 7-7 as Swain got his second point of the day, sliding past his defenseman and slinging a sidearm shot home.
  • The Dragons regained a two-goal lead with 10:42 to play on goals from faceoff man Anthony Rosato before Genord scored his second, making it 9-7.
  • Towson scored the final two goals of the third quarter as Josh Webber hit the brakes and let his man fly right by, stinging the near-side post. Thirty seconds later, Avanzato reset his career best with a fourth goal, tying the action at 9-9 with 5:12 to play. Neither team could find the cage for the final third of the period.
  • Towson regained the lead with 13:11 to play in the fourth as Andrew Milani hit a bouncer past McGill on a two-man power play.
  • Drexel tied the game yet again at 10-10 with 11:56 to play on Genord's fourth of the afternoon. The Dragons scored again from Mulcahy on the back end of a Towson offsides penalty, putting the host side up 11-10 with 9:49 to play in the fourth.
  • Towson retied the game at 11-11 as Swain bullied his way past his defender, sticking a shot near side for his second of the day with 6:43 to play. With less than five minutes to go, Drexel took the lead again at 12-11 as Genord scored his fifth goal.
  • A minute later, Towson responded as Luke Shilling got a feed from Alex Reid on the back side. Shilling started his dive before the ball got to him, setting up a quick-stick to tie things at 12-12 with 3:44 to play.
  • The Tigers took the lead with 2:13 to play in the game, scoring out of a timeout as Reid came around the goal and used two defenders as a screen to slip a shot past McGill.
  • With less than a minute to play, Towson came up with two huge saves from Brennan, both on the doorstep, including his final call to action with 12 seconds left in the game to seal Towson's first CAA win of the year.
Behind the Numbers
  • Avanzato reupped his career best efforts with his four goals. It was his first hat trick since March 11 across town at Saint Joseph's.
  • Constantinides won 21 faceoffs, a new career best. That ties for the fourth-most faceoff wins in a game by a Tiger in the Shawn Nadelen Era (2012). He collected 16 ground balls, the second-most grounders by a Tiger in the Nadelen Era.
  • Brennan made 16 saves on the day, getting his first start since March 5 at UMBC after suffering an upper body injury.
  • Potter grabbed five ground balls which causing three Dragon turnovers, adding a goal to his line as well.
  • Towson was nearly perfect in clears, failing to gain the zone one time on 15 chances. The Dragons went 25-for-25 in clears.
  • The Tiger man-up unit fought out a slump, scoring on both power play chances on Saturday, while the Towson downers held Drexel to one goal on two chances.
  • Towson snapped a two-game slide to the Dragons, who won both meetings last spring. The Tigers improved to 47-12 all-time against Drexel.
  • Towson head coach Shawn Nadelen won the 93rd game of his Black & Gold career.
  • The TIgers are now 8-2 all-time in CAA openers under Nadelen, winning their first league opener since 2019. The TIgers are 3-1 all-time against Drexel in CAA openers, including a 2-1 mark at Vidas Field.
Up Next for Towson
  • Towson continues its CAA tour, but returns home for the first time in a month as the Tigers.
  • The Tigers host University of Massachusetts in a heavyweight battle at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
  • Opening faceoff is set for noon and will be carried on FloLive.
