Blumenauer Strikes Out Eight, Towson Baseball Falls to Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team attempted to get back from an early deficit vs. Hofstra but fell on Saturday 12-5.
 
Towson (9-29, 0-11 CAA) scored four runs in the third in an attempt to come back from Hofstra's (18-15, 9-5 CAA) seven-run third.  Both teams went scoreless through the next five innings, with Stephen Rosso hitting a three-run home run in the ninth to seal the game for Hofstra.
 
Key Stats:
  • Jack McLaughlin gave Towson a first inning lead with a solo home run, finishing 2-for-5 on the afternoon.  Burke Camper was 2-for-3 and a hit-by-pitch and an RBI while Elijah Dickerson reached base five times off a single and four walks, adding a run and RBI.
  • The loss went to Towson starter Nate Nabholz (1-5), who finished with four runs and two strikeouts in two-and-two-thirds. In relief, Teddy Blumenauer had a career-high eight strikeouts and was scoreless through four-and-a-third before having three runs in the ninth.
  • For Hofstra, the 3-through-6 of the order combined to hit 13-for-20, including Santino Russo hitting 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and four RBI.  Starter John Mikolaicyk did not decision with two innings and four runs.  Reliever Tristan Nemjo (1-5) notched the victory in relief on four innings, one run and three strikeouts while Steven Kaenzig got the save with two-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
How It Happened:
  • Towson struck first in a big way in the bottom of the first inning.  Jack McLaughin rode a two-out, full count fastball over the left field fence for a solo home run and a 1-0 Tigers lead.
  • Hofstra took the lead in the second inning with a single, double, ground out and single in succession to bring in two runs.  The next inning, two of the first three batters hit solo home runs to right.  Hofstra continued with the following six batters reaching, including five on hits.  A Michael Florides three-run double down the right field line completed a seven-run inning for a 9-1 Hofstra lead.
  • Towson responded quickly, loading the bases in the bottom of the third.  Elijah Dickerson drew a walk to push a runner home, then Nolan Young roped a single through the left side to bring in two.  Two batters later, Burke Camper arced a single to center for an RBI single, finishing a four-run inning as Towson trailed 9-5.
  • Each bullpen settled down and started to blank the other team, led by Teddy Blumenauer going through the eighth without a run and striking out eight batters.  Hofstra broke the drought in the ninth with a three-run home run to lead 12-5, the eventual final score.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Teddy Blumenauer's eight strikeouts is the most for a Towson pitcher in a single game this season.
  • Towson has hit at least one home run in each of its last four games.

Towson and Hofstra return to Schuerholz Park tomorrow, completing the series in a 1 p.m. game.
