Late Hits Not Enough as Towson Baseball Falls at Northeastern

BOSTON – The Towson University baseball team scored twice in the eighth and put a pair of runners on in the ninth in a comeback attempt at Northeastern but fell to the Huskies 6-2.

Towson (10-32, 1-13 CAA) got two runs in the eighth to get the potential tying run on deck, but Northeastern (22-21-1, 6-8 CAA) got back the two runs back in the bottom half of the inning and held for the victory.

Key Stats:
  • Jordan Peyton finished 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of doubles, scoring a run in the eighth inning.  Trent Gast-Woodard went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
  • Nick Janowicz (0-6) and Jake Pecilunas combined to hold Northeastern to five hits in eight innings.  Janowicz was handed the loss with four runs, only two earned, in six innings with four strikeouts.  Pecilunas had two innings, two runs and three strikeouts.
  • For Northeastern, JP Olsen went 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk and two runs.  Starter Cam Schittler (3-7) earned the victory, going eight innings with two runs and seven strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Early advantage went to Northeastern in the bottom of the second as a hit-by-pitch, triple and wild pitch led to two runs and a 2-0 home team lead.
  • Jack McLaughlin got a two-out double in the fourth but was stranded after a groundout.  NU got a run, aided by a throwing error, that inning to lead 3-0.
  • With two out and one on in the fifth, Jordan Peyton whacked a ball down the left field line for a double to set up two runners in scoring position, but a ground out ended the inning with no damage.
  • In the sixth with a man on third and two out, a swinging third strike was ended on a passed ball, leading to the runner scoring and pushing the score to 4-0.
  • Towson got a rally going in the eighth, beginning with a Chandler Castleberry walk and a second double by Peyton.  Trent Gast-Woodard grounded a ball through the left side for an RBI single, then a double play ball allowed another run to score as Towson pulled within two at 4-2.
  • Northeastern countered in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with two walks and a sacrifice bunt.  Luke Masiuk singled back up the middle for two more runs and pushing the Huskies back up by four 6-2.
  • Back-to-back walks in the top of the ninth with one out for Towson put the potential tying run on deck, but a pair of long flyouts ended the game in favor of Northeastern 6-2.
Inside the Numbers:
