TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team had a 3-1 lead after five innings vs. Georgetown but fell to the Hoyas 9-6 on Wednesday afternoon.
Towson (11-20) rode five strong innings from
Madeline Harris, including three perfect frames to begin, but Georgetown (12-17) scored eight in the sixth inning and held off a Towson comeback attempt to win the game.
Key Stats:
- Towson outhit Georgetown 9-6 in the game, including Cori Jones reaching base three times on a 2-for-2 day, hitting a triple and earning an RBI. Sydni Byers was 2-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk while Briana Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
- Madeline Harris pitched five innings in her start, her longest of the year, allowing one run and two hits. The loss went to reliever Bre McDowell (0-1), who had six runs surrendered in one-third of an inning.
- For Georgetown, Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza hit a grand slam in the game, finishing 1-for-3. Julia Parker (4-8) got the victory in her start, going five innings for six runs and two strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Towson got off to a fast start in the first inning, getting two runners to scoring position with one away. Sydni Byers laced a ground ball single up the middle to bring in one, then Madyson Peters got home another on a ground out. Cori Jones then crushed a ball over the centerfielder's head for an RBI triple, making it 3-0 Towson.
- Madeline Harris pitched three perfect innings to begin the game. Georgetown got its first baserunners to open the fourth, with Briana Ramirez throwing out a runner from deep right at third to get a big out. Georgetown did get a run on an RBI single by Abby Smith as Towson led 3-1.
- Georgetown got its bats going in the top of the sixth, scoring eight runs, capped by a grand slam by Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza, to lead 9-3.
- Towson looked to counter in the bottom half of the sixth, beginning with three consecutive singles, including Peters with an RBI single. Jones walked to load the bases, then two batters later, Rylee Penrod lined a single to left for two runs to pull Towson within three.
- Towson's final effort came in the seventh on a leadoff double by Ramirez, but Towson could not get another runner on and fell 9-6.
Inside the Numbers:
- Madeline Harris pitched her longest outing of the year. She had thrown four innings vs. USC Upstate on Feb. 12.
- Paige Kostick made her pitching debut for the Tigers today.
