Towson Softball Narrowly Defeated in Doubleheader vs. UNCW

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team gave a pair of challenges to one of the top teams in the Colonial Athletic Association, but just came up short in both games of a doubleheader, falling to UNCW 3-1 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Towson (11-22, 1-7 CAA) rode strong pitching from Julia Jackson and Madeline Harris against UNCW (24-7, 6-2 CAA) and had potential tying runs at the plate or closer in the final inning of each contest, but could not bridge the final gap.
 
Key Stats:
  • Nicole Kidwiler hit safely in each contest, combining to go 4-for-7 with an RBI.  Briana Ramirez tallied three hits on seven at-bats while Cori Jones was 3-for-6 with two RBI.
  • Julia Jackson (8-9) went the distance in game one, having the loss with seven innings, three runs and five strikeouts. Madeline Harris (0-4) also earned a complete game, going seven innings with four runs and four strikeouts.
  • For UNCW, Janel Gamache combined to hit 3-for-7 with a double, home runs and two RBI.  Emily Winstead (9-3) took game one with seven innings, one run and eight strikeouts while Kara Hammock (8-2) won game two, going 5.2 innings with two runs and a strikeout.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead. Anna Knox led off by reaching base when she was hit by a pitch. Elizabeth Winstead laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base on an error as Knox advanced to third base. But Winstead was out at second when she tried to advance. Pearce Arial gave the Seahawks the lead when she blooped a double to left. The Tigers got out of the inning when Winstead was thrown out to trying to steal.
  • With one out, Tayler Vitola reached base on a bunt single. Janet Gamache drilled a double to right centerfield to score Vitola to make it 2-0 UNCW. After she went to third on a sacrifice bunt, Morgan Britt grounded out to end the frame.
  • After being shut out on two hits through four innings, the Tigers cut their deficit to 2-1 in the fifth. Cori Jones led off with a single. She went to second base on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Nicole Kidwiler singled to left centerfield, making it 2-1. Brianna Ramirez was retired on a fly ball to left, ending the rally.
  • In the seventh inning, Mary Dobotka led off with a single to right. She went to second base on an infield grounder. With two outs, she scored on a double by MacKenzie Amodeo. Towson looked for a final rally: with one out, Cori Jones singled, but the Tigers did not score and fell 3-1.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • With one out in the first, Janel Gamache gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead when she blasted her seventh home run of the season to right centerfield.
  • Anna Knox singled with one out in the second inning. After Mary Sobatka reached on a fielders choice, Knox went to third base. Sonata stole second base as Knox scored when the catchers throw went into centerfield.
  • In inning three, MacKenzie Amodeo and Elizabeth Winstead singled with one out and advanced into scoring position on an infield grounder. Anna Knox singled to right driving in two runs to give the Seahawks a 4-0 lead.
  • The Tigers rallied in the sixth inning when they cut their deficit to 4-2. MacKenzie Lake reached base on an infield error. With one out, Madeline Peters singled to left. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Cori Jones singled to left driving in two runs. She moved to second base on the throw to the plate. A walk to Gracyn Houmis put two runners on. Amerlyn Pearce came in from the bullpen and retired Emma Armstrong on a fly ball to end the threat.
  • Towson had a final threat in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out but could not score as Towson fell in game two 4-2.
Inside the Numbers:
  • All three of the last CAA games for Towson have been decided by two runs.
Next Game:
Towson and UNCW will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Tiger Softball Stadium.
