Jackson’s Stellar Start Not Enough as Towson Softball Edged at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Julia Jackson held Charleston scoreless through the opening five innings in a pitcher's duel, but the Towson University softball team fell to the Cougars 1-0 to close out the series.
 
Towson (14-31, 4-14 CAA) and Charleston (14-35, 7-10 CAA) were scoreless through five innings with Jackson and Carli McCants earning strong performances on the mound.  Charleston got its run in the sixth on a Peyton Wade triple followed by a Mia Dittoe sacrifice fly as the Cougars held for the victory.
 
Key Stats:
  • Julia Jackson (11-14) had just one run allowed in her complete game despite the defeat, going six innings with three strikeouts.  Mackenzie Lake and Chloe Poulich each were 1-for-3 with a double.
  • For Charleston, Carli McCants (6-9) pitched a seven-inning shutout, striking out five in seven innings for the win.  Peyton Wade reached base twice in the game, going 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk.
How It Happened:
  • Mackenzie Lake hit a two-out double in the opening inning, but a foul out retired the side with a run.
  • Towson threatened again in the top of the fourth with a two-out Chloe Poulich double to center, but the Tigers did not score.  The Tigers against threatened with two outs in the fifth with first and second, but another fly out ended the inning.
  • Julia Jackson allowed just a combined four hits in the opening five innings.  In the sixth, Peyton Wade tripled to center and was pinch run for.  Mia Dittoe hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the runner and give Charleston a 1-0 lead.  Towson did not get a runner on in the seventh and fell 1-0.

  • Julia Jackson pitched her 17th complete game of the season.
  • With the defeat, Towson is eliminated from a potential CAA Tournament berth.
Next Game:
Towson will play its final CAA series beginning on Friday, May 6 with a doubleheader vs. Hofstra at noon.
