Towson Baseball Edged in Walk-Off at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team kept close with Elon after scoring twice in the fifth to tie the game, but the Tigers fell to the Phoenix 5-4 on a walk-off by the home team.

Towson (11-37, 1-17 CAA) kept the game tied from the top of the fifth into the bottom of the ninth off strong pitching from Doug Marose.  With the bases loaded and one out, a hit-by-pitch allowed Elon (24-22, 8-10 CAA) to walk off for the win.

Key Stats:
  • Three Tigers earned multi-hit performances, including James Moses going 2-for-4 with a double, run and stolen base.  Elijah Dickerson drove in three runs via single and sacrifice fly, finishing 1-for-3.
  • On the mound, starter Ethan Pecko did not decision, going 2.1 innings with three runs, just two earned, and a strikeout.  Doug Marose pitched the fifth through the seventh scoreless, allowing just one hit and striking out two.  The loss went to reliever Jake Pecilunas (1-4), who, despite a scoreless eighth, had the walk-off run charged in the ninth and two strikeouts.
  • For Elon, Alex Iadisernia was 1-for-4 with three RBI, including the winning RBI hit-by-pitch in the ninth.  Starter Joe Savino had three runs and two strikeouts in four innings for the no-decision.  Reliever Kyle Greenier (4-2) notched the victory with the final three innings pitched, having no runs and three strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Towson broke through in the third inning.  With second and third and two away, Elijah Dickerson flew a single down the left field line to drive in a pair and push Towson ahead 2-0.
  • Elon also made its way to the scoreboard in the third, loading the bases with one out.  Alex Iadisernia grounded a ball through the left side for a two-run single.  Later, a walk and passed ball allowed another run to score as Elon led 3-2.
  • The home team added another in the fourth off back-to-back two-out doubles to go up 4-2.
  • Towson countered in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with a Jake Lysaght single, Nolan Young walk and James Moses single.  Dickerson had a 10-pitch at bat and got a sacrifice fly, then a double steal got another run on Young's theft of home to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Doug Marose pitched through three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit in that span, to keep the game tied.  Jake Pecilunas continued that pace, going through a scoreless eighth and ending with a swinging strikeout to keep the game tied going into the ninth.  But in the ninth, a double, bunt single and intentional walk set up bases full and one out.  Iadisernia was hit by a pitch to push home a run and give Elon the 5-4 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Cam Clark made his 68th career pitching appearance for Towson, moving him to sixth all-time in program history.  Jake Pecilunas made his 103rd career pitching appearance, increasing his Towson record.
  • Elijah Dickerson earned his ninth multi-RBI game of the season and fifth with at least three runs driven in.
  • This game started at 3:30 p.m.  It was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. but was moved up due to concerns about inclement weather.
  • With the defeat, Towson is eliminated from a potential CAA Tournament berth.
