Men’s Lacrosse Halted in CAA Championship Game

PHILADELPHIA – A run to the NCAA Tournament was not to be for the Towson University men's lacrosse team as the Tigers fell 11-6 against the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.

Towson (7-9) was led by Luke Shilling led the way for the Tigers with two goals and two assists. Shane Brennan made 15 saves in net for the Tigers. Both were named to the CAA Men's Lacrosse All-Tournament Team, alongside close defenseman Koby Smith.

Delaware (11-5) won its first CAA Championship since the 2011 season. Tye Kurtz led the Blue Hens with six goals en route to CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer honors. Five other Blue Hens scored in the game. Delaware went 14-of-21 at the faceoff spot.

How it Happened
  • Delaware took a 2-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes, winning the opening faceoff and getting a goal from Kurtz 21 seconds in. Clay Miller extended the lead at 12:28 of the first before Towson had its first offensive set.
  • The Tigers got on the board at 10:32 as Shilling backed up a shot and dodged below goal line extended, leaning into his defender and skipping a shot five hole on Delaware's Kilkeary.
  • Delaware retook a 3-1 lead with 7:16 to play in the first with a Mike Robinson goal.
  • Towson pulled back within one with 6:36 to go in the first period as Kyle Berkeley displayed patience and body control, tip-toeing the crease and waiting for Kilkeary to move before scoring behind the keeper, making it 3-2.
  • The Tigers tied the game at 3-3 on a quick-stick finish from Nick DeMaio at 4:23, getting a dish on the backside from James Avanzato.
  • Delaware retook the lead at 3:30 of the first on a second goal from Kurtz with Ward on the assist. That stood as the final goal of the first quarter as Delaware held a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes.
  • The Tigers pulled back to a 5-4 deficit as Webber came out of the box and used a quick first step to get past his defender, beating Kilkeary five-hole with 8:24 left in the half. Delaware pushed its lead back to two at 6-4 with a third goal from Kurtz at 6:20 of the second quarter.
  • Kyle Kivinski pushed Delaware's lead out to 7-4 with 3:39 to play in the half with an unassisted effort. With 95 seconds left in the half, Delaware extended the lead to 8-4 with Kurtz's fourth of the day. That score stood for the remainder of the half as Towson trailed by four at the break.
  • It was well over 10 minutes into the second half before either team scored. Kurtz scored with 3:46 to play in the third quarter on a diving one-handed shot to put the Blue Hens up 9-4.
  • The Blue Hens scored early in the fourth quarter with 11:48 to play, extending the lead to 10-4.
  • Chop Gallagher ended a 32-minute scoring drought for the Tigers, hitting a 15-yard step down shot with 5:40 to play in the fourth quarter, cutting Delaware's lead to 10-5.
  • Delaware put its lead back to six with 4:38 to play on Acchione's second for an 11-5 lead.
  • Towson scored a man-down goal on Shilling's second of the day as defensive midfielder Brandon Hund picked a pass and fed it down to Shilling on the crease. That was the final goal of the 2022 CAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, finalizing the game at 11-6.
