st minute equalizer goal was not enough for the Towson University women's soccer team, falling to La Salle 3-1 with the Explorers scoring twice in the final six minutes.
Down 1-0 at the break, Towson (1-1) engaged in a physical game with La Salle (1-0), tying the game as
Jasmine Hamid passed to Canoles for the goal in minute 81. La Salle went back ahead in the 85
th minute and held the rest of the way, adding an insurance goal for the victory.
Key Stats:
- The teams were even in shots at 12 each and in corner kicks with four each.
- Phoebe Canoles scores her second goal in as many games, having five shots, including four on goal. Jasmine Hamid earned her first assist of the season, adding two shots, while Demi Pierre got three shots.
- In goal, Riley Melendez got the defeat, having five saves and three goals allowed. Towson had a pair of team saves, one from each Canoles and Pierre.
- La Salle had three different goal-scorers, all scoring on second chance shots: Courtney Butlion (41'), Shea Collins (85') and Kelli McGroarty (90'). Haley Gschrey assisted the first two goals. Michaela Auguadro notched the victory, saving four shots and allowing one goal.
How It Happened:
- Neither side got much going in the early stages as the teams combined for one shot in the opening 29 minutes. Towson had a couple of corner kicks in minutes 18 and 25 but did not connect shots against either.
- Towson tried to break the La Salle five-player back line in the 30th minute on a pass to Khori Banks, but the chance went right.
- On a breakaway in the 34th minute, a takedown in the box led to a La Salle penalty kick. Riley Melendez stifled the chance on a shot towards the right side, making the save.
- Minute 41 saw a long shot towards the left post be saved by Phoebe Canoles. On the deflection, Courtney Butlion scored to make it 1-0 Explorers.
- Towson countered in the final minutes of the half, including Canoles with a high shot being saved, but went into the break down 1-0.
- The second half began similarly to the first, with neither side getting a strong chance in the early going.
- In the 65th minute, a header shot by Demi Pierre was deflected out of bounds for a corner kick, but the attempt was cleared out by La Salle.
- Towson continued to get pressure on the visitors and pressed towards the box. Jasmine Hamid and Canoles each had looks in the 70th and 72nd minutes respectively, being saved by Michael Auguadro.
- Towson broke through in the 81st minute as Hamid dribbled around a trio of La Salle defenders and passed off to Canoles. Canoles finished the play with a kick past a diving Auguadro near the right post to equalize the game at 1-1.
- Towson held off two La Salle corner kicks as the Explorers got space down in the Towson defensive third. In minute 85, Melendez turned back two Explorer shots, but the third chance was a goal by Shea Collins close range to push the visitors ahead 2-1.
- Pierre had a final chance for Towson off a corner kick, sending a header wide right. La Salle got an insurance goal in the final minute, Kelli McGroarty scoring off a saved shot by Ricshya Walker, to win 3-1.
