Towson Women’s Soccer and GW Grind to a Stalemate

WASHINGTON – The Towson University women's soccer team and GW battled to a scoreless draw on Thursday night.

Towson (1-1-1) pushed GW (1-0-2) on the rain-soaked turf in the nation's capital, having a couple close shots in the second half.  Neither side broke through in a very even contest by both sides.

Key Stats:
  • GW led in shots 9-7, whereas Towson led in corner kicks 5-3.
  • Riley Melendez finished with the shutout in goal, saving four GW shots.
  • Three Towson players each had two shots in the game: Phoebe Canoles, Jasmine Hamid and Demi Pierre.
  • For GW, two goalkeepers, Ainsley Lumpe and Grace Crowe, each played a half to combine for the shutout.  Rachel Sorkenn led the Colonials with three shots.
How It Happened:
  • Both sides went back-and-forth in the early minutes, with neither squad having a clear chance in the opening 10.  In the 11th minute, Phoebe Canoles took a shot from outside the box on a low laser, being saved.  The resulting corner was cleared out by GW.
  • Five minutes later, Jasmine Hamid took her own long-range attempt from the right side, going high.
  • Towson kept the pressure on in the following minutes, but GW countered and started to get long possessions on offense.  Cammie Dopke had an attempt in the 21st minute, with Riley Melendez making the save.
  • GW had a set piece attempt off a corner kick in the 36th minute after a missed shot.  A chance in the bottom left corner was saved by Melendez.  The two teams went into halftime tied at zero.
  • Early into the second half, Rachel Sorkenn got just past the Towson back line in looking for a goal, shooting left and being saved by Melendez.  The Tigers countered as Khori Banks came down the left side and looked for Nia Christopher, missing on the cross.  Second attempt by Demi Pierre missed outside the post.
  • In minute 52, Towson got close towards the box, with Hamid getting some save inside the penalty area.  She went for a left-to-right shot, just missing beyond the right post.
  • Pierre got another chance off a long header, being saved by Lumpe near the left post.  Towson got a corner kick, which was cleared out by the Colonials.
  • GW again got its push towards the latter part of the half as the home team got some space in the 70th minute.  The first shot from up top the box was blocked, then a second attempt was called off due to offsides.
  • Towson counterattacked, again looking for the shot long range.  Canoles's shot from about 24 meters out drilled the crossbar, being cleared out.  Minutes later, Reese Borden got inside the box right corner and fired towards the left side, with Lumpe diving for the save.
  • The Tigers held off a GW blitz with two hard shots in a span of 30 seconds missing high and wide.  Each side had a final push but did not get a shot off, leading to the match ending in a draw.
