Pair of Goals, Strong Defense Powers Towson Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Win Against UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team finished non-conference play with a 2-0 win against UMBC on Thursday night. The win moves the win streak to six and is the most non-conference wins in program history.
Towson (7-1-1) got an early first half goal from Jasmine Hamid and never looked back. Phoebe Canoles added an insurance goal in the 75th minute off a penalty kick.
The Tigers improve their win streak to six games and remain unbeaten in the last seven with six shutouts.

Head Coach Katherine Vettori:
"It was a fight tonight and it was not easy, but I am happy about the shutout and it's exciting to be 7-1-1. Our defense is communicating well and Riley (Melendez) is really organizing them well."

Key Stats:
  • Towson outshot UMBC 11-6 including 4-2 in shots on goal.
  • Phoebe Canoles led the Tigers with three shots and one goal. Jasmine Hamid also had a goal on two shots.
  • Riley Melendez made two saves for Towson for her sixth solo shutout of the season.
How It Happened:
  • Jasmine Hamid got the Tigers on the board in the 10th minute. Hamid headed home a corner kick from Reese Borden to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
  • Towson had a pair of chances just minutes later, but a shot from Demi Pierre was blocked and an attempt from Maja Hansson went wide.
  • UMBC had a good chance off the corner in the last minute, but Riley Melendez comes up with the ball to give Towson a 1-0 lead at the break.
  • Nia Christopher found herself free at the top of the box in the 48th minute, but her attempt sailed just wide.
  • Danielle Campbell nearly gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead but she hit the right post from 20 yards out.
  • UMBC had a good chance in the 68th minute but Riley Melendez came up big with a save, punching the ball over the net.
  • Phoebe Canoles gave Towson a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute. After a handball in the box, Canoles stepped up and converted the penalty kick in the lower left corner.
  • UMBC would have a threatening free kick late, but Melendez scooped up the ball to give Towson a 2-0 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Riley Melendez posted another shutout and has not allowed a goal in her last 298:34 of game action.
  • Jasmine Hamid now has a goal in her last three games.
  • The Tigers recorded their seventh non-conference win, the most in program history.
Next Game:
The Tigers will begin CAA play against conference newcomer Monmouth on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Tiger Field at 6 p.m.
