Towson Football Falls at FBS West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Towson University football team fell to FBS opponent West Virginia 65-7 on Saturday afternoon to complete non-conference play.

Towson (2-1) tied the score early on a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by D'Ago Hunter, but West Virginia (1-2) controlled the game the rest of the way for the victory.

With the defeat, Towson enters Colonial Athletic Association play at 2-1.  It is the second season in the last three where the Tigers entered league play with a winning record.

Key Stats:
  • Tyrrell Pigrome had 59 yards passing for Towson, off 7-for-14, while Nathan Kent had 39 yards, going 3-for-5.  The top target was Da'Kendall James, who made five receptions for 44 yards.
  • Devin Matthews led Towson in rushing with 38 yards on seven attempts, averaging 5.4 yards a carry.
  • Including his 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, D'Ago Hunter had 246 all-purpose yards.
  • On defense, Ubayd Steed and Mason Woods led all players with nine tackles, with the latter adding a pass break-up.
  • WVU had a pair of 100+ yard rushers: Tony Mathis had 104 yards and two touchdowns while CJ Donaldson got 101 yards and three scores.  JT Daniels passed 16-for-24 for 174 yards and a score.  Caden Biser led WVU on defense with six tackles and a fumble recovery.
How It Happened:
  • WVU received and went to the rush early, beginning with Tony Mathis going for 40 yards combined on two rushing plays.  A couple of tackles by Mason Woods and Shafeek Smith slowed the pace, but a 14-yard pass to Bryce Ford-Wheaton got the home team to the Towson 2.  Two plays later, a fade pass to the end zone made it 7-0 WVU with 11:27 left in the first.
  • Towson responded in a big way.  D'Ago Hunter received the kickoff at the Towson 4 and returned the ball 96 yards for the touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.
  • Next drive, WVU got short passes to come down the field, aided by a face mask penalty.  A 20-yard pass to Kaden Prather set up first and goal from the three, where Mathis scored on a run up the middle.  WVU led 14-7 with 5:40 left in the first quarter.
  • Towson was forced to a three-and-out and punted away, backing the Mountaineers to their own 18, but a CJ Donaldson 82-yard rush on the left side made the score 21-7 WVU with 3:40 left in the 1st.
  • Following a Towson three-and-out, WVU had a short field after pressure forced a short punt.  A couple of runs and short passes into the second quarter, WVU again got to the Towson 3 off a 14-yard catch by Ford-Wheaton.  The Tigers held on a couple of incomplete passes, but a Donaldson three-yard push up the middle gave the home team a touchdown, making it 28-7 WVU with 12:59 left in the 2nd.
  • Towson had trouble getting around the WVU pass rush and had to punt again on a three-and-out.  Mathis led the next drive down the field, including a couple of 11+ yard rushes to push deep into the Towson red zone.  Mathis completed the drive with a two-yard burst into the end zone to make the score 35-7 WVU with 5:59 left in the 2nd.
  • Following a Towson three-and-out drive, a 51-yard pass to San James got WVU to the Towson 9.  The Tigers held, including Woods with a hard tackle for no gain on a Donaldson, to force a field goal attempt.  WVU led 38-7.
  • Towson got its best offensive drive towards the end of the first half as four Tyrrell Pigrome completions, including three to Da'Kendall James, brought the Tigers into WVU territory.  Towson was stifled and attempted to go for it on fourth down, but an incomplete pass ended the drive.  WVU scored one more touchdown before the half's end to lead 45-7 at the break.
  • Scott Smith III took over in the second half, but another three-and-out forced a punt.  WVU methodically drove down and scored a touchdown on a Garrett Greene QB keeper 11-yard rush.  The extra point attempt hit the upright as the score was 51-7 WVU.
  • A Devin Matthews burst up the middle for 11 yards began the next Towson drive.  Towson continued to hit away with the run, with Smith III rushing for eight, then Matthews finding a hole on the left side to convert a fourth down just outside WVU territory.  Hunter and Matthews continued to push downfield, with another Matthews fourth down conversion on fourth and short getting the Tigers to the WVU 27.  However, two plays later, a Smith III fumble got the ball back to WVU.
  • WVU continued the short passes to come down the field into the fourth quarter.  Another WVU touchdown with 11:12 to play made it 58-7 Mountaineers.
  • The home team added one more touchdown as Towson pushed for another drive. Nathan Kent led the drive and found Malik Jackson for 25 yards down the sideline.  The Tigers got as far as the WVU13 but ran out of time and fell to the Mountaineers.
Inside the Numbers
  • This was Towson's first kickoff return for a touchdown since D'Ago Hunter returned one 92 yards for a score vs. Bucknell on Sept. 19, 2019.
  • Da'Kendall James has made at least three receptions in all Towson games this season.
Next Game:
  • Towson returns to Johnny Unitas® Stadium next week to host New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. for Family Weekend.
