TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team squared off against the Hampton Pirates this Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (11-0, 1-0 CAA) swept the Pirates (3-1, 0-1 CAA) in straight sets, 25-10, 25-19, 25-12 to hand Hampton their first loss of the year.
Key Stats vs Hampton:
- Towson totaled 11 service aces, a season best, compared to zero for Hampton.
- The Tigers registered a .326 hit percentage, including a .429 percentage in the first set.
- Towson had 44 kills, scoring double digit kills in every set, while holding Hampton to only 20.
- The Tigers combined for 41 assists, which extended their streak to four games of 40 or more assists.
- Towson held the Pirates to a .033 hit percentage, their lowest of the season, including -0.071 in the first set.
How It Happened vs Hampton:
- Towson opened the match with a 7-2 run with two kills by Irbe Lazda, then Towson followed with an 9-1 run that Aayinde Smith and Victoria Barrett each registered two kills apiece to give the Tigers a 16-3 lead.
- Hampton and Towson traded points up to 19-9, then the Tigers closed out the set with a 6-1 run on four errors by the Pirates to give the first set to Towson, 25-10.
- The Tigers scored the first three points of the second set, then Hampton responded with four consecutive points to take their first lead of the match. Towson countered with their own 4-0 run to regain the lead at 7-4.
- The teams went back-and-forth exchanging one or two point streaks until Hampton brought the score to 18-17. Towson finished the second set on a 7-2 run highlighted Fay Bakodimou's three kills, including the final two points to win the set, 25-19.
- The Tigers started the third set on an 8-4 run that included back-to-back aces from Bakodimou. The Pirates reduced the lead down to two, but Towson scored nine straight points, including three service aces by Rachel Hess to take an 18-7 lead.
- Towson maintained a strong lead over Hampton, then finished the third set on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-12 and win their 11th straight match.
Inside the Numbers vs Hampton:
- The Tigers had seven players register two or more kills with Victoria Barrett having ten to lead the team.
- Barrett added three block assists, three digs, two aces and had a .400 hit percentage.
- Rachel Hess had a season-high three service aces, five assists, and eight digs.
- Katie McCracken totaled 17 assists and nine digs, while fellow setter Sarah Jordan had nine digs and 18 assists, adding two aces.
- Seven Tigers registered a block assist this afternoon with Aayinde Smith leading the way with four.
- Towson improves to 11-0 on the year for the second straight season.
