Towson Volleyball Sweeps Stony Brook in Hard-Fought Match

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team faced off against the Stony Brook Seawolves Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (13-0, 3-0 CAA) swept Stony Brook (5-7, 0-3 CAA) in a highly contested match 26-24, 29-27, 25-19.
 
Key Stats vs Stony Brook:
  • Towson totaled seven service aces for the second straight match.
  • The Tigers had a .370 hit percentage, including .405 percentage in the first set.
  • Towson combined for 54 kills, having 15 or more kills in every set.
  • The Tigers racked up 51 assists, which extended their streak to six games of 40 or more assists.
  • Towson registered 47 digs compared to 32 digs for the Seawolves.
 
How It Happened vs Stony Brook:
  • Stony Brook jumped out to a 6-3 lead with three consecutive kills by Kali Moore. Towson was able to cut the deficit to one multiple times, but the Seawolves were able to gain a 14-10 lead.
  • The Tigers went on a 7-3 run to tie the score at 17 on a Nina Cajic' second kill of the match. The teams went back-and-forth until Towson scored three straight points to take a 22-20 lead.  
  • Stony Brook responded with 4-1 run to force set point, but the Tigers countered with three unanswered points highlighted by a Morgan Wilson ace to win the first set 26-24.
  • The Seawolves opened an 8-4 advantage to start the second set, but Towson responded with four consecutive points on two kills from Fay Bakodimou to tie the game at eight.
  • Stony Brook and Towson exchanged the lead four times, then the Seawolves went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Tigers tied the game up at 18 after scoring three unanswered points.
  • Stony Brook regained the lead after two errors by the Tigers and held on to a lead all the way to 24-23. Towson was able to fend off two match points to keep the set going and was able to win the set on third match point attempt on an attack error by Stony Brook to win the set 29-27.
  • In the third set, Towson got out to an early 8-3 lead, then the Seawolves cut the deficit to three. The Tigers scored four consecutive points to take their biggest lead of the afternoon at 12-5.
  • Stony Brook chipped away at the deficit getting as close as two points, but three consecutive kills gave Towson an 18-13 advantage. The Tigers were able to maintain a strong lead and hold off the Seawolves to seal the victory and the third set 25-19.
 
Inside the Numbers vs Stony Brook:
  • The Tigers had seven players with multiple kills, including Nina Cajic having a career-high 14 kills. Cajic had a .737 hit percentage to lead Towson.
  • Irbe Lazda had 13 kills with a .440 hit percentage, one dig and one block assist.
  • Fay Bakodimou totaled nine kills for the fourth time this year and the second match in a row. Bakodimou added in six digs, one ace and one solo block.
  • Five Tigers registered a service ace with Morgan Wilson and Rachel Hess having two aces each.
  • Hess had 18 digs and has registered double-digit digs in five of the last six matches.
  • Sarah Jordan had a career-high 26 assists this afternoon passing her previous high of 25 against Rutgers. Jordan totaled five digs and one ace in the match.
  • Towson improves to 13-0 on the year and has tallied ten sweeps so far.
  • The Tigers have won ten straight sets, dropping their last set against #7 Pittsburgh on Sept. 10th.

Towson will play Stony Brook at 1 p.m. tomorrow, then host North Carolina A&T at SECU Arena on October 1-2 at 1 p.m.
