TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to face UMBC over two days of competition this week at Burdick Pool. Diving is scheduled for noon tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 17. Swimming will commence the following day, Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. Wednesday's swimming portion will be available to stream on FloSports.
This marks Towson's second home meet of the season. Both programs defeated William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition on Oct. 22.
Scouting the Retrievers - Men
The Retrievers have faced two common opponents the Tigers have faced this season, Johns Hopkins and the Naval Academy. UMBC fell to Navy 163-115 on Oct. 22 and to Johns Hopkins 176.5-110.5 on Oct. 8.
Scouting the Retrievers - Women
UMBC's women's squad has also faced Johns Hopkins and the Naval Academy this season. The Retrievers fell to the Blue Jays 166-121 on Oct. 8 and to the Naval Academy 153.5-122.5 on Oct. 22.
Last Time Out vs. UMBC - Men
The Retrievers and Tigers last faced off on Nov. 6, 2021 in Baltimore, Md. UMBC defeated the Tigers 157-141.
Last Time Out vs. UMBC - Women
The last time the Tigers and Retrievers faced, UMBC edged Towson151-148 on Nov. 6, 2021. The Tigers had been on a nine-meet winning streak before that loss.
CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week | December 6, 2022
- Benzing added his fourth CAA weekly honor following his performance at the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open from Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
- He placed 12th in the 100 breast (LCM) with a time of 1:02.35, finishing just .16 seconds off the qualifying mark for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.
- His times of 54.83 in the 100 fly (LCM) and 23.38 in the 50 free (LCM) were good for 20th and 34th overall in the events respectively.
CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week | November 22, 2022
- Benzing was awarded his third CAA weekly honor of the season after winning six events and setting five meet records at the Patriot Invitational from Nov. 17-19.
- He posted NCAA B cut times in the 100 breast (52.37) and the 100 fly (47.14), which respectively stand as the second-fastest and fastest times in the CAA this season.
- Benzing's time of 43.92 in the 100 free set a meet record and is currently the second-fastest time in the CAA this season.
CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week | November 1, 2022
- Brian Benzing collected his second CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week award in as many weeks on Nov. 1 for his performance in the Patriot Invitational from Nov. 17-19.
- He won the 100 fly at 47.61 and placed second in the 50 free with a time of 20.45.
- Benzing was also featured in four relays: the 800 free, 400 free, 400 medley and 200 medley relays.
CAA Women's Diver of the Week | November 1, 2022
- Shannon Parrau was awarded the CAA Women's Diver of the Week award on Nov. 1.
- The freshman posted a winning score of 254.25 on the 1-meter board.
- She claimed first place on the 3-meter board with a score of 252.60.
CAA Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week | November 1, 2022
- Katie Nunez was named the CAA Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 1 following the Thomas Murphy Invitational.
- Nunez collected three individual wins in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 breast.
- Her 23.38 in the 50 free was just four one-hundredths of a second off the Mangione Pool record.
CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week | October 25, 2022
- Brian Benzing was named the CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 25 after winning two individual events and the 200 free relay against William & Mary on Oct. 22.
- Benzing's 20.44 in the 50 free and 48.01 in the 100 fly marked the fastest times in the CAA at that point in the season.
