TOWSON, Md. – Towson men's basketball fought off a slow start to defeat Northeastern 72-63 on Thursday night. The Tigers used a big 12-1 run to end the first half to take a two-point lead and got another run in the second half to pull away for good.
Charles Thompson led Towson (15-7, 7-2 CAA) with 20 points on 7-11 shooting. Towson held Northeastern (8-12, 4-5 CAA) to just 22 percent from three, forcing 11 turnovers.
Key Stats:
- Thompson went 6-7 from the foul line as the Tigers shot 77 percent as a team from the charity stripe.
- Cam Holden added a 13-point, 10-rebound double double. Nicolas Timberlake added 14 points on 3-5 shooting from three.
- Towson shot just under 40 percent from the floor for the game, scoring 46 points in the second half. The Tigers got a big contribution from their bench, outscoring the Huskies 19-5.
How It Happened:
- Northeastern got out to a five-point lead at the under 16 timeout. Cam Holden would cut that deficit to two with a three at the top of the key.
- The Huskies would go on a five-point run to push their advantage to 14-7 by the under 12 timeout.
- Nicolas Timberlake would cut the deficit to six after a three from the top of the key as the Tigers continued to chip away at the deficit.
- Towson would take their first lead of the game after a 10-0 run capped by a Nygal Russell three on the fastbreak.
- The Tigers would end the half on a 12-1 run to take a 26-24 lead at the break. Towson forced eight turnovers and scored 10 points in the paint.
- Both teams would start out hot from the floor exchanging baskets in the first four minutes of the half.
- Towson would start to distance themselves off a 7-0 run that put them up by seven. Nicolas Timberlake capped the run with a triple.
- Charles Thompson would take over in the middle part of the half, scoring 11 points in a nine-minute span.
- The Huskies would trim the deficit to five with a minute to go, but the Tigers held on for a 72-63 win on Thursday.
