Women’s Soccer Battles Monmouth to Scoreless Draw on Thursday Night

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Towson women's soccer battled host Monmouth to a scoreless draw on Thursday night. In the process, the Tigers improved their unbeaten streak to eight games and stayed on top of the conference standings.

Towson (10-1-2, 6-0-2 CAA) had the better of the possession in the second half against the Hawks (6-3-2, 5-0-2 CAA) but could not find the back of the net on Thursday. The Tigers improved their unbeaten streak to eight and remain unbeaten in league play. Riley Melendez earned her third straight shutout, inching closer to the program record.

Key Stats: How It Happened:
  • Both teams battled for possession early. The Hawks had the first good look on goal but the shot went wide of Riley Melendez in goal.
  • Jasmine Hamid just minutes later had a golden look off a cross from Alexandra Rush, but her shot just sailed wide of the goal.
  • The Tigers had a good build up in the 20th minute. Nia Christopher took the ball down the sideline and slotted a pass to Phoebe Canoles. She would have her shot stopped with the follow up from Hamid sailing high.
  • Towson would start to find their footing late in the first half. Julie Lynch would get a shot on target late in the half but the Tigers and Hawks went into the halftime break scoreless.
  • The second half started much the way the first did with both sides fighting to gain possession.
  • Towson had a dangerous free kick early in the half. Phoebe Canoles placed a good ball toward Hamid but it just skipped past her foot.
  • Both defenses would continue to hold off the other side as just 17 total shots were taken in the game that ended in a scoreless draw.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Riley Melendez picked up her sixth shutout of the season and her 25th of her career, now just three shy of tying Tina Steck for the program record of 28.
  • This is just the third time the Tigers have been outshot in a game and the Tigers are now 1-1-1 in those games.
Next Game:
  • Towson returns to Tiger Field on Sunday, Oct. 8 to take on UNCW. Kick-off with the Seahawks is slated for 1 p.m. and will be the team's annual Pink Game. The first 75 fans will receive a pink t-shirt.
