Towson Football Falls Late to UAlbany

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University football team had a 17-14 third quarter lead on Homecoming but fell to UAlbany 24-17 on Saturday.

Towson (2-4, 1-2 CAA) had taken a 17-14 lead late in the third quarter when Devin Matthews scored his fifth touchdown of the season to cap off 61-yard drive. Carter Runyon's two-point conversion put the Tigers up by three points.

UAlbany's (4-2, 2-0 CAA) quarterback Reese Poffenbarger scored on a six-yard touchdown run to snap a 17-17 tie and give the Great Danes a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.  Towson looked to a final drive and reached the UAlbany 1 with less than a minute to go, but a rush attempt was stopped short as UAlbany took the victory.

Key Stats:
  • The game was near even from a yardage standout as Towson had a 319-299 edge in total offensive yards.  Towson had a 102-74 edge in rushing yards while UAlbany had a 225-217 lead in passing yards.
  • Towson forced three turnovers while UAlbany forced two.
  • Nathan Kent was 19-for-31 on passing with 217 yards and an interception, adding 25 rushing yards.  His main target was Carter Runyon, who finished with seven catches, 74 yards and a two-point conversion.  Devin Matthews was Towson's leading rusher, going 25 carries for 48 yards and a score.
  • Keegan Vaughan converted all three field goal attempts, all in the first half, including one for 37 yards.
  • On the defense, three Tigers had six tackles each, including Dion Crews-Harris having six tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
  • For UAlbany, Reese Poffenbarger was 18-for-25 for 225 yards, two scores and a pick.  On the ground, Griffin Woodell rushed 17 times for 76 yards, also having 51 receiving yards and a score.  Dylan Kelly finished with 23 tackles, adding a forced fumble and recovery and a pass break-up.
How it Happened
  • UAlbany started on offense and began the game with an eight-minute drive.  Reese Poffenbarger kept passing downfield and led the Great Danes to three third down conversions and a trip to the red zone, where Ernie Smith sacked the quarterback to set up third and seventh.  On fourth and six, Poffenbarger's pass was too deep in the end zone for the turnover on downs.
  • Towson took over and went the rest of the quarter.  A mix of Nathan Kent passes and Devin Matthews rushes slowly got Towson upfield.  Towson went for it on fourth and one and converted on a D'Ago Hunter rush up the gut for six, then on another four and one, Matthews converted with a pound up the middle.  Towson got to the UAlbany red zone and settled for the field goal, taking a 3-0 lead on the first play in the second quarter.
  • A 39-yard pass to MarQeese Dietz set up UAlbany in Towson territory.  On third and six, three straight completions, capped by a 12-yard pass to Griffin Woodell for a touchdown, gave UAlbany a 7-3 lead.
  • Towson went three and out, then a 38-yard completion to Levi Wentz for UAlbany, adding a roughing the passer, put the visitors on the Towson 14.  Mason Woods and Tylen Wallace combined to stop a rusher for a loss of four years, but a 16-yard catch by Brevin Easton then a two-yard catch and score for Dietz pushed UAlbany ahead 14-3 with 7:30 left in the second.
  • Towson responded beginning with a 33-yard kickoff return from Hunter.  The Tigers converted a trio of third downs, including Nathan Kent finding Carter Runyon for 27 yards to reach the UAlbany 13.  Towson was stopped as Keegan Vaughan knocked down his second field goal, from 28 yards out, to pull Towson within eight at 14-6 with 1:38 left in the half.
  • A muffed kickoff was recovered by Justin Toler on the UAlbany 24.  Towson could only get four yards, but a Vaughan 37-yard field goal made it 14-9 UAlbany, the eventual halftime score.
  • Into the third, Towson got off to a hot start with a 32-yard kickoff return from Hunter and a 29-yard reception by Lukkas Londono.  But as Kent ran for an eight-yard gain, a fumble forced and recovered by Dylan Kelly gave the ball back to UAlbany.  But four plays into the UAlbany drive, Poffenbarger tried to throw deep, with Robert Javier making the interception at the Towson 16.
  • A pass to Daniel Thompson IV for six yards got a first down but Towson needed to punt soon after.  After a couple of first downs for UAlbany, Mason Woods forced a fumble on Nate Larkins, where Dion Crews-Harris recovered for on the Towson 39.  Towson responded, earning three big plays in a row: 19-yards catch by Londono, 17-yard reception for Hunter and a 23-yard catch near the sideline for Zay Perkins. Facing third and goal at the one, Matthews pounded the ball up the middle for the touchdown.  Runyon made a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion, giving Towson a 17-14 lead with 4:02 left in the third.
  • The Towson defense swarmed Poffenbarger one the next drive and sacked him twice, forcing a punt.  But with Towson deep in its own territory, a deflected pass was intercepted by Ori Jean-Charles to give UAlbany the ball on the Towson 10.  The Towson defense held as an illegal touching penalty for UAlbany nullified a touchdown.  A field goal tied the game at 17-17 going into the fourth.
  • The UAlbany defensive line stopped Towson twice on one-yard to go and forced a punt.  Poffenbarger converted a second and 16 on a 17-yard pass to Julian Hicks and was aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty.  A couple more 10+ yard plays set up Poffenbarger for a six-yard rush and score to give the lead to UAlbany 24-17 with 9:22 left.
  • Each side had a three and out as Towson set up its drive from its own 31.  Matthews broke away with a 22-yard sprint off a drop-off pass as Towson continued to move up field, having a pass interference penalty put the Tigers on the nine. On third and goal, Matthews got the pass and reached the one-yard line, but on fourth and goal, Matthews was stopped behind the line of scrimmage.  UAlbany held for the 24-17 win.
