Runyon, Brooks Highlight Towson Football in Phil Steele FCS Postseason Awards

TOWSON, Md. – The honors continue to come in for the Towson University football team in the 2023 Phil Steele FCS Postseason Awards, announced by the publication this week.

Carter Runyon was recognized as Phil Steele FCS Second Team All-American at tight end while KJ Brooks earned FCS Freshman Third Team All-American at offensive line.

In addition, Towson picked up 10 Phil Steele All-Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) selections, led by Runyon on First Team.  The Tigers placed five on the Second Team: Jesus Gibbs at defensive line, Robert Javier at defensive back, Keegan Vaughan at kicker, Josh Cupitt at punter and D'Ago Hunter at all-purpose.  Hunter notched three Phil Steele All-CAA awards, also being Fourth Team kick returner and Fifth Team punt returner.  Joining Hunter on the Fifth Team is Ralph Paige Jr. on the offensive line and Dion Crews-Harris on the defensive line.

Runyon picks up his second All-America honor, earning Associated Press Second Team All-America earlier this week.  The redshirt junior led Towson in all major receiving categories with 43 receptions, 549 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

Brooks also earned Freshman All-America recognition by FCS Football Central.  The team's starting right tackle helped a Towson squad which allowed just 15 sacks all season, the top mark in the CAA.

Gibbs was also a Second Team All-CAA player.  A fixture on the defensive line, Gibbs was Towson's leader in sacks with six and tackles for loss with 12.5, totaling 40 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles.

Javier, a Second Team All-CAA cornerback, was tasked with guarding the opponent's top receiver, leading the Tigers with four interceptions and eight pass break-ups, adding 29 tackles.

Vaughan, the Second Team All-CAA kicker, was top-11 in FCS in each total field goals with 15 and an 83.3% field goal %, totaling 68 points with 23 converted extra points.

All-CAA Honorable Mention punter Cupitt finished the regular season at third in FCS and first in the CAA with 44.9 yards per punt, having eight punts of over 50 yards on the season.

Hunter, despite playing just six games before an injury ended his season, was a Third Team All-CAA kick returner to add to the Phil Steele awards.  The graduate student averaged 159.8 all-purpose yards a game, tallying up 485 kick return yards, 29 punt return yards, 308 rushing yards and 137 receiving yards.

Paige Jr., an Honorable Mention All-CAA player, was Towson's starting center in nine games, helping anchor Towson's line which a CAA lowest 15 sacks all season long.

Also an Honorable Mention All-CAA player, Crews-Harris was Towson's sacks leader going into the final game, finishing with five and adding 37 tackles and two fumble recoveries.
