BALTIMORE, Md. – Towson men's basketball won their second straight game with an 89-73 victory against UMBC to win the Charm City Hoops Classic. Sophomore
Christian May had another 20-point performance, pouring in 24 points.
Towson (5-5) led for all but three minutes against UMBC (5-7) and scored 46 points in the paint against the Retrievers.
Key Stats:
- May went 9-14 from the floor including 6-10 from three. Tomiwa Sulaiman also hit double figures with 16 points and five rebounds.
- Tyler Tejada (14), Dylan Williamson (11) and Charles Thompson (10) also hit double figures. Williamson added a career-high eight assists with Thompson adding a team-high eight rebounds.
- The Tigers shot 52 percent from the floor and hit 11 three pointers (42 percent). Towson outrebounded the Retrievers 42-21, including 16 offensive rebounds.
How It Happened:
- Christian May opened the game with a three on the wing on the first possession for the Tigers. However, the Retrievers would rip off a 7-0 run to force a Towson timeout.
- Towson would respond with a corner three by Christian May and a put back from Tomiwa Sulaiman to cut it to 9-8.
- The Tigers would go on a run of their own to pull ahead after Chase Paar finished in the paint to give Towson a four-point lead.
- That would spark a 5-0 run capped with a Sulaiman three to force a UMBC timeout up six.
- Christian May would catch fire toward the end of the half making back-to-back triples to close out the half with 19 points, giving Towson a 46-38 lead.
- Towson outrebounded UMBC 24-9 with 11 offensive rebounds. May went 7-10 from the floor and 5-8 from three.
- The Tigers got out of the gates in the second half connecting on their first four shots to push ahead by 16 points early in the half.
- Both teams would exchange baskets as the Retrievers trimmed the lead to as many as 12 before the Tigers found a response in the form of a Tyler Tejada and one.
- Towson would continue to push ahead keeping a double digit lead the rest of the way, capping the game with a Tejada slam. The Tigers defeated the Retrievers 89-73 on Saturday.
Inside The Numbers:
- Charles Thompson tied Eddie Keith for third place in career games played with 127. Thompson also moved into fourth place in rebounds passing Robert Nwankwo and is now 22nd on the all-time scoring list passing John Davis.
- Dylan Williamson dished out a career-high eight assists with Tomiwa Sulaiman having his best scoring output as a Tiger.
- This was the eighth straight win for the Tigers over the Retrievers in the series history.
