Cristino Finishes Day with Three Home Runs in Two Games, Tigers Come Up Just Short Against Southern Illinois

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team dropped two tough decisions Saturday in two games against USC Upstate and Southern Illinois.

Against Upstate (2-0), Towson (0-3) got out to an early lead on a two-run home run in the first inning. The Tigers maintained the lead through five, losing it after a six-run sixth inning from the Spartans. The Tigers got four combined hitless innings from two pitchers in starter Nate Nabholz and relief pitcher Andalo Santangelo.

Facing Southern Illinois (2-1), the Tigers jumped out to a lead courtesy of a John Cristino blast to left field. They surrendered that lead in the bottom of the inning but continued to battle. A second Cristino home run in the sixth tied the game but the Tigers went down one in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers challenged late but couldn't get the run needed to extend the game.

Key Stats:
  • Towson had 10 hits in the afternoon game, including two multi-hit games from newcoming Tigers John Cristino and Brian Heckelman. Cristino picked up three hits, including a two-run home run in the first. Heckelman reached base three times on two hits and a walk.
  • Nate Nabholz tossed 3.0 hitless innings in his first start of the year against Upstate. He allowed just two base runners on walks in the first inning.
  • Shayne Clowar surrendered just one hit in 3.0 innings pitched against Southern Illinois in his first appearance with Towson in four seasons.
  • Cristino hit three home runs on the day, totaling five hits and 5 RBI
  • Towson out-hit the opponent in both games, including doubling Upstate's hits in the afternoon game.
  • Adam Grob's home run in the sixth inning put the first game out of reach, giving the Spartans a five-run lead.
  • Jack Rigoni's single through the left side proved to be the difference in the second game, giving the Salukis the lead.

How it Happened (Game 1):
  • James Moses reached on an error to lead off the game. Then Cristino wasted no time in the top of the first, hitting a home run to center for a 2-0 early lead.
  • Nate Nabholz came out of the game after three innings, replaced by Brett Seils.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Noah Rabon walked and advanced to third on a single on the following at-bat. J.D. Brock flied out to left field, sending Rabon home on a sacrifice fly.
  • Gernon was hit by a pitch to start the sixth and advanced to third on a single through the right side on the next at-bat. He scored on a Koby Kropf groundout back to the pitcher. Cam Clark came on to relieve Seils, following a walk. A bunt with runners on the corners sent Rabon home. Brock scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded, advancing the runners. Adam Grob homered with two on to extend the Spartans' lead to 7-2.
  • The Spartans got two more runs across in the bottom of the eighth. One on a bases-loaded walk and another on a sacrifice fly to right on the following at-bat.

How it Happened (Game 2):
  • John Cristino hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, a shot that cleared the light pole in left field.
  • Brandon Jung came on to relieve Clowar to start the bottom of the fourth. After walking Kaebor Rog, Ryan Rodriguez hit an RBI double, sending Rog home on an error. Later in the in inning with the bases loaded, a Jack Rigoni single through the left side sent home two runs to give the Salukis a 3-1 lead.
  • Casey Bishop walked to start the sixth inning, followed by Cristino's third home run of the day and second of the game to tie the game.
  • With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, a double steal scored another run for Southern Illinois, giving them a one-run lead (4-3).
  • The Tigers challenged in the late innings but couldn't get a run across to extend the game.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Nabholz recorded his first collegiate multi-inning hitless outing, allowing just two base runners on walks in the first inning of game one.
  • Cristino picked up two multi-hit games in his second and third games as a Tiger, racking up three home runs and five RBI on five hits.
  • Heckelman recorded his first collegiate multi-hit game in his second start, also reaching base a third time on a walk.
  • Shayne Clowar allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings pitched in his first appearance (and start) with Towson in four seasons with the team. He missed the last two due to injury and didn't see action in his first year with the Tigers.
