TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team dropped Sunday's series finale against South Carolina Upstate 10-2.
Upstate got on the board first with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Tigers battled, getting two runs across in the game but couldn't outlast the Spartans' persistent offense.
Key Stats:
- Towson finished with two doubles in the game, two more extra-base hits than the Spartans.
- The Tigers left seven runners on base in the contest, same as the Spartans.
- Five of the Spartans' runs on the day were unearned.
How it Happened:
- In the bottom of the second, the Spartans got runners on the corners via back-to-back singles from Al Holguin and Cole Caruso. Holguin scored on a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and second. With the bases loaded later in the inning, back-to-back wild pitches scored two more for the Spartans. An error with runners on second and third brought two more across for the home team, making it 5-0.
- In the top of the sixth, James Moses walked with two outs. Back to the top of the order, Casey Bishop brought Moses home with an RBI double to cut into the deficit.
- Caruso singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. In the following at-bat, Braxton Boddorf reached base on an error, moving Caruso to third. Adam Grob's sacrifice fly to center sent another run home for Upstate, pushing the lead to 6-1. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Grant Sherrod pinch-hit for Noah Rabon, getting hit by a pitch to send a run home. Cam Clark entered the game for Luis Rivera, striking out one with the bases loaded. With two outs, Noah Sullivan singled to right center, sending home two more runs to make a 9-1 game.
- In the bottom half of the seventh, Jordan Peyton took the mound. With runners on the corners, Adam Grob hit a sacrifice fly to center, sending home Caruso.
- In the top of the ninth, Josh Janove doubled to left center and advanced to third on an error. Bobby Spencer, coming in to hit for Jack Lawrence, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Tigers their second run of the day.
Inside the Numbers:
- Freshman Cole Stefano registered his first collegiate hit on an eighth inning pinch-hit single to right center.
- Freshman catcher Josh Janove picked up first collegiate hit on a pinch-hit ninth inning double in his first appearance this season.
- In the final six innings, Towson pitchers held USC Upstate hitters to just three hits. Andalo Santangelo, Cam Clark and Jordan Peyton combined to give up just one earned run on three hits in 3.2 combined innings pitched. Santangelo has allowed just one total hit in his two appearances so far in the early season.
