TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team defeated Binghamton 10-1 on Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Balanced hitting combined with Towson's pitching staff not surrendering a run after the second inning of the game powered the Tigers to their first win of the season.
The Bearcats scored first in the bottom of the second on a single through the right side.
Brian Heckelman responded with a two-run triple in the top of the third inning.
Bryce Frederick's double to follow brought the lead to 3-1. The Tigers tacked on four more runs in the fourth on a
Jordan Peyton single, a
James Moses double and a
Brian Heckelman single. In the fifth,
Bobby Spencer sent home
Jeremy Wagner on a sacrifice fly to right.
Elijah Dickerson picked up an RBI double in the ninth and Wagner sent home the Tigers' tenth run on a sacrifice fly.
Key Stats:
- The Tigers outhit the Bearcats 14 to seven, including four multi-hit games from James, Moses, Brian Heckelman, Jeremy Wagner and Jordan Peyton.
- The Tigers batted .438 (7-for-16) with runners in scoring position, adding a .800 (4-for-5) mark with a runner on third and less than two outs.
- Luis Rivera allowed just one run on three hits in his three-inning start. Max Simpson and Jordan Peyton tossed six combined scoreless innings in relief.
How it Happened:
- With a runner on third in the bottom of the second, Tommy Reifler's single through the right side gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the third, Brian Heckelman tripled to center field with runners on first and second, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. In the next at-bat, Bryce Frederick doubled down the left field line, extending the lead to 3-1.
- With runners on the corners in the top of the fourth, Jordan Peyton sent home a run with a single to center. James Moses doubled to left center the following at-bat, giving the Tigers a 6-1 lead. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Heckelman singled through the right side sending home Moses for a 7-1 Tigers lead.
- Jeremy Wagner led off the top of the fifth with a double to right, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Bobby Spencer sent Wagner home on a sacrifice fly to right field.
- In the top of the ninth with runners on first and second, Elijah Dickerson doubled down the left field line, sending home John Cristino to add another run. Jeremy Wagner's sacrifice fly to right with runners on second and third made it a 10-1 game.
Inside the Numbers:
- Max Simpson tossed four scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits and fanning two. That marks his first multi-inning scoreless appearance since April 22 of last year against Hofstra where he allowed no runs on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
- Brian Heckelman picked up three RBI in the game, bringing his season total to five. He's now tied with John Cristino for the team lead.
- Peyton, Moses and Heckelman each picked up their second multi-hit games of the year. Jeremy Wagner picked up his first with three hits on the afternoon
