Towson Baseball Holds Villanova to Three Hits, Emerges Victorious in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats 3-2 in the home opener at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md. Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Wildcats got two runs on three hits in the second inning to take an early lead. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning with a Jordan Peyton sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom half of the sixth, Bobby Spencer hit an RBI triple, sending Elijah Dickerson home to tie the game. In the seventh, Bryce Frederick's sacrifice fly to right scored what would be the winning run in the ballgame.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson's pitching staff limited Villanova to three hits on the day, holding the Wildcats hitless after the second inning.
  • Nate Nabholz and Spencer each tossed three hitless innings in relief. Nabholz recorded one strikeout and one walk while Spencer registered three strikeouts and two walks.
  • The Tigers had seven hits on the afternoon, including three multi-hit games from Casey Bishop, Dickerson and Spencer.
  • The Tigers batted .259 (7-for-27) overall and .308 (4-for-13) with runners on, compared to Villanova's .100 (3-for-30) and .200 (2-for-10) respective outputs.
 
How it Happened:
  • With runners on the corners in the top of the second, Cameron Hassert grounded out to short to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. John Whooley's double to follow scored Colin Quintano for Villanova to extend the lead.
  • Jeremy Wagner led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and Dickerson was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat. Bobby Spencer followed with a single up the middle to load the bases.
  • With Dickerson on second in the bottom of the sixth, Spencer tripled to right center to tie the game.
  • In the following inning, James Moses walked in the leadoff spot and Bishop singled to left field, pushing Moses to second. Moses stole third base before Brian Heckelman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Frederick hit a high fly ball to right field to send home Moses for the winning run.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Casey Bishop recorded his second multi-hit game of the season and leads the team with a .310 (9-for-29) batting average (min. 10 AB). He has hit safely in all but one game this year, recording an RBI still in that hitless game.
  • Nate Nabholz recorded his third consecutive multi-inning hitless appearance. He has yet to give up a hit or run through 9.0 innings pitched, striking out 10 and walking six.
  • Dickerson matched his season output for hits in the game, lifting his batting average from .077 to .138
  • Spencer recorded his first hitless appearance of the season, registering his first win of the year.
 
On Deck for the Tigers:
Towson will host Eastern Michigan in a four-game series at Schuerholz Park starting Friday, March 3 at 2 p.m. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. with the second expected to start at 2:30 p.m. Sunday's series finale is set for 1 p.m.
