Towson Baseball Splits Doubleheader with North Carolina A&T

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team split against North Carolina A&T in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) doubleheader on Saturday. The Tigers took down the Aggies 10-3 in game one and lost 6-3 in game two.
 
In game one, Towson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning on four hits. A single, walk, and back-to-back singles scored the first. A wild pitch, single and double play groundout brought the next three home. The Tigers put up five more in the sixth on six hits, including a three-run home run from Brian Heckelman. Jeremy Wagner hit a solo shot to right center in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-0. The Aggies scored three runs on four hits in two errors in the seventh, bringing the final score to 10-3.
 
For game two, the Tigers got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Heckelman singled to left field to score James Moses. Bryce Frederick followed with an RBI groundout to short. The Aggies tied the game on a home run to right field in the second. In the third, an RBI groundout put A&T on top by one. In the fifth, a run scored on a throwing error from the pitcher on a bunt. A sacrifice fly later in the inning made it a 5-2 game. Reyce Curnane hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, cutting the deficit to two. A single to center with runners on first and third scored another run for the Aggies, bringing the final score to 6-3.
 
Key Stats:
  • The Tigers outhit the Aggies 14 to six in game one, including four multi-hit games from Moses, Casey Bishop, Jeremy Wagner and Jordan Peyton. Towson batted .455 (5-for-11) with runners in scoring position in the game.
  • The Towson pitching staff allowed just one earned run on six hits in game one. Tyler Russo tossed three hitless innings to close out the first game, lowering his ERA to 3.38.
  • The Aggies batted .333 (3-for-9) with runners in scoring position in game two, mirrored with the Tigers hitting 1-for-8 in those situations.
 
How it Happened (Game One):
  • In the third, James Moses hit a high chopper single to third base with the bases loaded to score the first run. The Tigers extended the lead on a wild pitch, moving the runners to second and third. Casey Bishop hit a single through the left side, making it 3-0. Later in inning with the bases loaded, Moses scored on the 6-4-3 double play to tack on another run.
  • The Tigers extended the lead to 9-0 in the sixth on six hits. With runners on first and third, Jack Lawrence singled up the middle for the first run. Josh Janove's double play groundout allowed Jordan Peyton to score another. After back-to-back hits, Brian Heckelman's home run to right center tacked on three more for the Tigers.
  • After a pitching change to start the seventh, Jeremy Wagner extended the lead with a solo home run to right center.
  • The Aggies cut into the deficit with three runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the inning.
  • Tyler Russo closed out the game with 3.0 hitless innings pitched with two strikeouts and one walk.
 
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • The Tigers scored first in game two with two runs in the first. With runners on first and second, Heckelman singled to left field to score James Moses. Frederick followed with a groundout out to first, scoring the second of the inning.
  • The Aggies got two across in the second on a Camden Jackson home run to right field.
  • A groundout to short gave the Aggies the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Sabin Roade of North Carolina A&T bunted with a runner on second, advancing the runner. Roade was safe at first and the run scored on a throwing error from Brandon Jung. Another scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly, bringing the game to 5-2.
  • Dickerson 's single and Wagner's double put runners on second and third in the sixth. Reyce Curnane hit a sacrifice fly to center to send home the third run for the Tigers.
  • The Tigers challenged with a few runners in the last three innings, but still needed two to push the game to extras.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Brian Heckelman had three RBI in game one, tying his season-high against George Washington on March 8. He and Frederick each had one in game two, bringing their totals to 15, good for sixth in the CAA.
  • Justin Rebok picked up his first career win in game one, tossing two scoreless innings giving up two hits. He struck out two batters and walked three. Tyler Russo tossed three hitless innings in relief to close out the game.
  • James Moses extended his on-base streak to 13 games. He broke his hitting streak at seven games after game one of the doubleheader.
  • Bishop and Wagner picked up two multi-hit games each on the day. Bishop leads the team now with seven this season. Wagner now has six.
 
On Deck for the Tigers:
Towson returns to Schuerholz Park to face Marist on Tuesday, March 14 and Wednesday, March 15. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts. Following that, the Tigers will face off with UNCW in a three-game CAA series from March 17-19.
