Towson Baseball Walks It Off in the Ninth over Marist

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team defeated Marist 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon, securing the winning run on a walk off in the bottom of the ninth inning at Schuerholz Park.
 
Marist got on the board first with three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the first. The Tigers batted through the order in the bottom of the inning, taking a 4-3 lead after one. The Red Foxes retook the lead in the second, Colin Mackle's double scored Danny Moshier and Brian Hart's single scored Mackle later in the inning. Bryce Frederick tied the game at five in the second with an RBI double down the left field line. The Tigers pushed the score to 7-5 on a fielder's choice and error in the bottom of the third. Nathan Lincoln's sacrifice fly to left field cut the lead to one. In the seventh, James Moses' double down the right field line pushed it back to a two-run game, 8-6 Tigers. Bayram Hot's single up the middle tacked on one more for Marist. Mackle hit a single up the middle in the ninth with runners on first and second, forcing the Tigers to come back to the plate for the bottom of the ninth. Jeremy Wagner led of the ninth with a single to left. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scoring on a Jordan Peyton ground ball to first base to walk it off.
 
Key Stats:
  • Tyler Russo needed just five pitches to get out of a bases loaded jam with the score tied in the ninth inning, picking up the win for Towson. He forced a putout at home and a putout at second to keep the score tied going into the bottom of the ninth.
  • James Moses and Jeremy Wagner combined to score five of Towson's nine runs in the game. Moses reached base four times on one hit and three walks, scoring twice, while Wagner picked up two hits and a walk to score three times.
  • The Tigers were disciplined at the plate, picking up 10 walks. That mark is the team's third-highest in a game this season.
 
How it Happened:
  • Marist put up three runs in the first. With runners on first and second, Bayram Hot's double down the right field line scored the first. An error scored one more, and on the following at-bat, a single made it a 3-0 game.
  • The Tigers responded by taking a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. Moses scored on a wild pitch. Bishop made it home a throwing error from the catcher on a double-steal with runners on first and third. Dickerson following with a double down the left field line, scoring Frederick. Later in the inning, Peyton's single to center scored Dickerson.
  • The Reds Foxes retook the lead in the second. Mackle's double with a runner on first tied the game. Later in the inning, Mackle scored on a Brian Hart single up the middle, making it 5-4.
  • Towson tied the game on Frederick's double down the left field line in the bottom of the inning.
  • With the bases loaded, Jeremy Wagner scored on Casey Bishop's fielder's choice grounder to short. The second baseman committed an error on the transfer, allowing another run to score.
  • Nathan Lincoln hit a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth to cut it to 7-6 Towson.
  • In the seventh, Moses hit a double down the right field line, making it 8-6 Tigers.
  • The Red Foxes cut the deficit back to one on a single up the middle in the eighth.
  • Marist got the tying run needed to force the Tigers to bat in the ninth on a Mackle single up the middle, scoring Lincoln.
  • Wagner led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, only 90 feet stood between the Tigers and victory. Jordan Peyton hit a ground ball to first base, allowing the winning run to score for Towson.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Tyler Russo picked up his first career win after pitching 0.2 innings in relief to close out the game.
  • Matt Lynch tossed his first multi-inning appearance of the season, surrendering one earned run on five hits. He recorded three strikeouts with no walks in relief.
  • James Moses extended his on-base streak to 14 games with a hit and three walks.
  • Casey Bishop extended his hitting streak to six games, his longest of the season and one short of the Towson season-high (Moses).
  • Jeremy Wagner picked up his seventh multi-hit game of the year, tying him for the team lead.
