Tiger Softball Battles Back from Early Deficit, Falls in 6-5 Heartbreaker at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Towson softball team battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the game, but a last inning walk-off RBI single gave UNCW a 6-5 win in the series finale on Sunday morning. Cori Jones led the Tigers at the plate with three hits with Madyson Peters driving in three runs in the loss.

Towson (8-8, 0-3 CAA) rallied in the fourth with four runs to tie it and once again tied the game in the fifth inning, but it was a seventh inning RBI single from UNCW (8-13, 3-0 CAA) that gave the Seahawks the win.

  • Cori Jones led the Tigers going 3-4 from the plate with a run scored.
  • Peters had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, including a two-run home run as a part of a four-run fourth inning.
  • Cara Bohner and Ally Hickman also drove in runs for the Tigers.
How It Happened:
  • The Seahawks came out with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Towson battled back to tie it with four runs in the fourth. Cori Jones led off the inning with a bunt single. Madyson Peters cut the deficit in half with a two-run home run to dead center.
  • Emma Armstrong would follow with a double and later score on a fielding error.
  • Ally Hickman drove in the tying run in Kellie Zoerb with an RBI single to make it 4-4.
  • The Seahawks would respond in their half with a run after a chaotic sequence to retake the lead 5-4.
  • Madyson Peters once again delivered with an RBI double to score Mackenzie Lake to tie it at 5-5.
  • Towson would threaten in the seventh getting Briana Ramirez and Cori Jones in scoring position, but both would be stranded on base.
  • UNCW would get a leadoff walk and then win it just two pitches later with an RBI single to give UNCW a 6-5 win on Sunday.

  • Madyson Peters hit her second home run of the season and the fourth of her career.
  • Cori Jones has now recorded a hit in seven of her last eight games and had her third multi-hit game of the season.
