TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game series to UNCW 10-5 Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
UNCW (12-7, 4-1 CAA) scored two in the first on three hits and an error. Towson (6-14, 1-4 CAA) tied it up in the fourth with back-to-back singles with runners on the corners, knocking Mason Murdock out of the game. The Seahawks pushed it to 5-2 in the fifth on an RBI double, RBI single and a balk, scoring one run on each play. UNCW tacked on two more in the seventh with a double to right center with a runner on second and a sacrifice fly later in the inning. The Tigers answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a walk and sacrifice fly. A single through the right side with a runner on third, a sacrifice fly and an error made it 10-4 in the eighth for UNCW. In the bottom half of the inning, Curnane walked with the bases loaded, bringing the game to the 10-5 final score.
Key Stats:
- Each of Towson's first six batters in the order recorded a hit on the afternoon, with the second through fifth hitters each picking up an RBI.
- The Tigers were outhit .333 (6-for-18) to .167 (2-for-12) with runners in scoring position. The Seahwaks held the hitting advantage overall, with two outs and in lead off situations.
- Ethan Pecko recorded four strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched while giving up five hits and allowing no earned runs in his second start of the season.
How it Happened:
- In the top of the first, Alec DeMartino singled through the right side with runners on the corners to push the first run across. Later in the inning, another single through the right side brought the score to 2-0.
- The Tigers knotted up the game in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners, Dickerson singled to left center to cut the deficit to one. Jeremy Wagner's single to left center on the following at-bat tied the game at two.
- UNCW got three more in the fifth. First, a double to left center with a runner on second scored the first. Two batters later, Brian Arendt singled through the right side making it 4-2. A balk with runners on second and third later in the inning scored one more for the Seahawks.
- With a runner on second in the seventh, Jac Croom hit an RBI double to right center. A sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Croom, making it 7-2 UNCW.
- With the bases loaded in the seventh, Brian Heckelman walked to cut the deficit to four. Bryce Frederick's sacrifice fly to right later in the inning scored Casey Bishop, making it 7-4.
- With a runner on third in the eighth, Tanner Thach's single through the left side scored one in the top of the eighth. Croom's sacrifice fly later in the inning made it 9-4. After stealing third, a muffed throw made it 10-4 UNCW.
- Reyce Curnane walked with the bases loaded in the eighth, making it 10-5.
Inside the Numbers:
- Casey Bishop extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games, also extending his on-base streak to 15 games, one shy of James Moses' season-high (16).
- Dickerson picked up his sixth multi-hit game of the season, picking up a triple and a RBI on the day.
- Pecko fanned four batters while giving up five hits and two unearned runs in his 3.0 inning start, his second of the year.
