Garrett’s Career Day Propels Towson Women’s Lacrosse Past Vanderbilt in Double Overtime

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Towson University women's lacrosse team traveled to Nashville to face Vanderbilt on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers (6-3, 1-0 CAA) won in double overtime on Lindsey Marshall's fourth goal to win their second straight match.
 
Gabby Garrett totaled a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists, while Blair Pearre added a season-high five goals and five draw controls. Marshall scored four goals for the second consecutive match.
 
 
Key Stats vs Vanderbilt:
  • The Tigers outshot the Commodores 35-29, including 2-0 in overtime.
  • Towson went 20-of-21 on clear attempts.
  • The Tigers scooped up a season-high 23 ground balls while forcing a season-best 13 caused turnovers.
  • Jo Torres registered seven saves for the Tigers while Vanderbilt's Paige Gunning finished with 10 saves.
     
How It Happened vs Vanderbilt:
  • The Commodores jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Halley Koras cut the lead in half when Gabby Garrett found her cutting to the middle.
  • Vanderbilt responded with two more goals to take a 4-1 edge, then Garrett scored her first of the day on a free position attempt.
  • The teams traded possessions for a couple of minutes with Blair Pearre breaking the deadlock with her first goal of the day.
  • Vanderbilt scored with 15 seconds left to lead 5-3 after the first quarter.
  • The Tigers started the second quarter with two quicks goals, which included Pearre going coast-to-coast to tie the score at five.
  • Vanderbilt countered with four consecutive goals to have a 9-5 lead with ten minutes left in the second.
  • Milana Zizakovic forced a turnover and set up by Garrett for her second goal of the game to trail by three.
  • Vanderbilt scored a free position attempt to restore a four-goal lead, but Shannon Sullivan converted a free position attempt to trail 10-7 heading into the locker room.
  • Pearre started the third quarter by completing her hat trick, but the Commodores responded with two goals to have a 12-8 advantage.
  • Pearre scored her fourth goal on a free-position attempt late in the third quarter to be down 12-9 heading into the fourth quarter
  • Garrett and Lindsey Marshall opened the fourth with a goal each to cut the deficit to one, then Pearre tied the score at 12 after she fired a shot top corner to get her fifth goal of the day.
  • Vanderbilt responded with a goal on its next possession, but Marshall got her hat trick when she split two defenders and fired a shot past Gunning to tie the game again.
  • The Commodores retook the lead with 3:09 left, but Garrett scored her career-high fourth goal on a wraparound shot.
  • Both teams had a shot saved at the end of the fourth quarter to head into overtime.
  • In the first overtime, the Tigers gave away the ball, but Emma Haring caused a turnover to deny Vanderbilt and drew a yellow card to put the Tigers a player up.
  • Towson couldn't score in the final minute, but the Tigers were still a player up to start the second overtime frame.
  • On the first possession of double overtime, Garrett tried to find Marshall, but the ball got knocked down. In the scramble for the ball, Marshall swung her stick backwards, which sent the ball over Gunning's stick to give the Tigers a double-overtime victory.

Inside the Numbers vs Vanderbilt:
  • This is Towson's first victory against Vanderbilt in program history.
  • Olivia Malamphy finished with a season-high three draw controls and had four ground balls.
  • Blair Goodrich led the Black & Gold with three caused turnovers.
