TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team battled back and forth with the College of Charleston, succumbing to a 6-5 final in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a walk-off single Friday evening at the Baseball Stadium at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Charleston (14-7, 5-2 CAA) scored first on a solo home run in the first. The Tigers (7-17, 1-6 CAA) responded by taking a 2-1 lead in the second on four hits. The Cougars retook a 4-2 lead on three hits in the third. The Tigers clawed back into the game, posting a run in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game. Towson took a one run lead in the eighth, which was matched by Charleston in the bottom of the inning. With no score in the ninth, the game went to extras tied at five. The Cougars ended it in the 11
th on a walk-off single with a runner on third.
Key Stats:
- Jordan Peyton was 3-for-5 with two doubles, 2 RBI and a run scored. Reyce Curnane finished 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season.
- Towson reliever Bobby Spencer (1-3) recorded the loss. Nate Nabholz registered a career-high seven strikeouts in relief for the Tigers, allowing one run on five hits in 4.0 innings.
- Charleston pitcher Alex Lyon (1-1) recorded the win with one relief inning of work. Center fielder Tyler Sorrentino finished the night 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
How it Happened:
- Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the first on a home run to right field.
- The Tigers responded with two runs on four hits in the second inning. Peyton's double with Wagner and Dickerson on the corners gave the Tigers the lead.
- Charleston took it back with three runs on three hits in the third, making it 4-2 headed to the fourth.
- Elijah Dickerson hit a single to center with a runner on third in the fifth to cut the deficit in half.
- The Tigers tied it again on Reyce Curnane's leadoff home run in the seventh inning.
- In the eighth, Jake Lysaght picked up his first base hit of the year with a runner on second to take the lead back for Towson.
- The Cougars answered with a single up the middle with a runner on second to tie the game again.
- With no scores in the ninth, the game went to extras. In the eleventh, Sorrentino singled to right field with a runner on. Jeremy Wagner's throw from right caught the runner at home to keep the game tied. A pickoff attempt that went by the first baseman allowed the runner to reach third. Trotter Harlan hit a single up the middle to walk it off for Charleston in the 11th.
Inside the Numbers:
- Nabholz recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in relief. His 29 strikeouts now rank sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
- Casey Bishop and James Moses extended their on base streaks to 19 and 18 games respectively, with Moses picking up a multi-hit game too.
- Curnane hit his second home run of the year in his ninth game played. He boasts 10 RBI and a current seven game hitting streak in that span.
