Towson Baseball Falls 5-4 in 17 Inning Nail-Biter at Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team went to extra inning against the College of Charleston for the second day in a row, falling 5-4 in seventeen innings Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game.
 
Towson (7-18, 1-7 CAA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on two hits and two errors. Charleston (15-7, 6-2 CAA) responded with one run on three hits in the second. The Tigers extended the lead to three on a double play groundout in the fourth. The Cougars tied it up in the seventh on three hits. No further scoring through nine sent the game to extras. Towson came up empty after challenging in the thirteenth inning. In the bottom of the seventeenth, a walk with the bases loaded ended it.
 
Key Stats:
  • Bryce Frederick led the charge at the plate with a 4-for-8 day with a double and a run scored. James Moses finished 2-for-7 with a triple and a run scored.
  • Towson reliever Matt Lynch (0-3) recorded the loss. Three Tigers, Andalo Santangelo, Jacob Whiteman and Cam Clark tossed 9.0 combined scoreless innings in relief, racking up six strikeouts while allowing two hits and three walks.
  • Charleston reliever Jake Brink picked up the win, giving up two hits in two innings pitched to close out the game. The Cougar right fielder Trotter Harlan finished 2-for-8 with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
How it Happened:
  • In the top of the first, Reyce Curnane hit a single towards second base, allowing Moses to advance to third. A fielding error by the second baseman allowed Moses to reach home. After a double down the left field line, Brian Heckelman's fly ball to left allowed another run to score. Elijah Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly to center for the third run of the inning.
  • Charleston posted one run in the second on three hits with a single to third scoring a run.
  • With the bases loaded in the fourth, Jordan Peyton scored on a double play to make it 4-1 Tigers.
  • The Cougars tied the game in the seventh on three hits with back-to-back singles with runners on the corners followed by a fielder's choice.
  • The game remained tied through the ninth inning and headed to extras. Andalo Santangelo tossed three innings allowing just one hit and no runs in the seventh through ninth innings.
  • Towson challenged in the 13th with the bases loaded, but a double play groundout ended the half of the inning.
  • After three scoreless to follow the bottom of the thirteenth, a walk-off walk with the bases loaded won the game for Charleston.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Marks the first time since 2013 the Tigers played in back-to-back extra-inning games. 17 innings mark the longest game played by the Tigers since May 19, 2006.
  • Casey Bishop and James Moses extended their on base streaks to 20 and 19 games respectively.
  • Reyce Curnane's two hit day extended his hitting streak to eight games in ten starts

The CAA series concludes tomorrow with game three returning to Patriots Point for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
