Towson Softball Splits Double Header at Elon on Saturday

ELON, N.C. – Towson softball picked up a 2-0 win in game one before falling late in game two, 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Elon.

The Tigers (13-13, 4-4 CAA) got a strong pitching performance from Maddie Gardner in game one. Gardner picked up her first shutout of the season with four strikeouts.

Key Stats – Game One: How It Happened – Game One:
  • Towson wasted little time taking the lead in the top of the first. Briana Ramirez led off the game reaching on a two-base error. She would later score on a Madyson Peters two-out RBI single to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
  • Tiger starter Maddie Gardner would continue to silence the Phoenix bats through the middle innings, giving up just one hit in the first four innings.
  • Cori Jones would extend the Tiger lead in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to score Ally Hickman, giving Towson a 2-0 lead.
  • The Tiger defense came up big in the sixth with Madyson Peters making a tremendous diving catch to end the inning and keep Towson in front 2-0.
  • Maddie Gardner would shut the door on the Phoenix in the seventh, striking out the last two batters to give Towson a 2-0 game one win.
Key Stats – Game Two:
  • Mackenzie Lake led the Tigers going 3-4 from the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.
  • Briana Ramirez added two hits and two runs scored.
  • Towson starter Morgan Wagner threw a complete game with two strikeouts.
How It Happened – Game Two:
  • The Tigers once again got out to a fast start with three runs in the first. Mackenzie Lake singled home Briana Ramirez who led off with a single.
  • Both Lake and Cori Jones would later score off an Elon error to give Towson a 3-0 lead.
  • The Phoenix would respond in their half of the first, getting a run off a throwing error to make it 3-1.
  • After Elon tied it in the bottom of the second, Towson would quickly retake the lead in the third. With the bases loaded, Ally Hickman would reach on a throwing error that scored Mackenzie Lake to give Towson a 4-3 lead.
  • The Tigers got into a jam in the third, but a heads-up play picks off the runner at third to end the inning.
  • Towson would extend to a 5-3 lead in the fourth off a Madyson Peters RBI single that scored Ramirez.
  • However, the Phoenix would take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting up three runs to take a 6-5 lead.
  • The Tigers would get a leadoff double from Cara Bohner, but the Tigers would fall in game two, 6-5.
Next Game:
The Tigers and Phoenix will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday, March 26. The game will air on FloSports with first pitch at 1 p.m.
