TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team took down the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) leader Elon 6-1 Friday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
The Tigers jumped out to a three-run lead on four hits in the second. Elon put up one run on three hits in the sixth, scoring the run on a single to center with a runner on second. In the home half of the inning,
Jeremy Wagner hit a home run to right field with a runner on to make it 5-1 Tigers. In the eighth,
Reyce Curnane hit a solo shot to right, making it a 6-1 game.
Max Simpson closed out the ninth with a save to pick up the Tigers' second conference win of the season.
Key Stats:
- The Tigers outhit the Phoenix 9-5 on the afternoon, with Brian Heckelman, Jeremy Wagner and Elijah Dickerson picking up multi-hit games. Heckelman, Wagner and Reyce Curnane each hit a home run in the game, the second time this season the Tigers have had three in a game.
- Towson starter Justin Rebok (2-1) picked up the win after allowing two hits in five innings of work with four strikeouts and a walk. Max Simpson recorded his second save of the year in four relief innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out four.
- Elon starter Shea Sprague recorded the loss with five earned runs allowed in six innings pitched.
How it Happened:
- Towson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second. Heckelman scored the first run on a home run to left field. Following back-to-back singles, Harper Sy hit a double in the right-center gap to score two more for the Tigers.
- Elon cut the lead to two in the sixth. With a runner on second, Cole Reynolds' single to center field made it 3-1.
- With a runner on the bottom of the inning, Wagner hit a home run to right field to make it a 5-1 game through six.
- The bottom of the eighth, Curnane hit a home run to right for his third of the year to make it a 6-1 game.
- Max Simpson closed out the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to record his second save of the season.
Inside the Numbers:
- Curnane extended his hitting streak to a team-high 11 games after his 1-for-3 day. His on-base streak of 13 games dates to his first start of the season on March 11 vs. North Carolina A&T.
- Wagner picked up his first multi-RBI game of the year on his two-run shot to right in the sixth inning.
- Rebok dropped his ERA from a 5.33 coming into the day to a 4.45 after his five-inning scoreless start. Simpson has recorded both Towson saves this season and dropped his ERA from a 4.22 to a 3.91 with his one run surrendered in four innings.
