Towson Softball Defeats Bucknell, Falls Against Coppin State on Sunday

TOWSON, Md. – Towson softball concluded the TU DeMarini Invite on Sunday with a 4-2 win against Bucknell and a hard fought 3-2 loss against Coppin State in the finale.

Towson (6-5) fell behind against the Bison before a three-run inning help the Tigers take the lead for good. Against the Eagles, the Tigers held a lead before needing a run to force extras. In the extra frame, Coppin State would score and hold off the Tigers to take it 3-2.

Key Stats vs. Bucknell:
  • Briana Ramirez went 3-4 from the dish to lead the Tigers, driving in a run.
  • Mackenzie Lake and Sydni Byers also drove in runs with Byers adding a pair of hits.
  • Erin Brown picked up the win with a complete game, scattering six hits and giving up just two runs.
How It Happened vs. Bucknell:
  • The Bison got things started in the second with a solo home run.
  • Towson quickly responded with a three spot in their half of the second. Byers drove in Cori Jone with a single to right and would score on a Ramirez RBI single to left.
  • Mackenzie Lake drove in Elizabeth Yoskowitz just pitches later to give Towson a 3-1 lead.
  • Bucknell would cut the deficit to one with an RBI single, but Cara Bohner had a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to score Nadia Martyniuk.
  • Erin Brown closed the door with a great catch for the last out to give Towson a 4-2 win.
Key Stats vs. Coppin State:
  • Mackenzie Lake and Madyson Peters each had a multi-hit game with two hits with Peters driving in a pair of runs.
  • Byers added to her RBI total for the day with an RBI.
How It Happened vs. Coppin State:
  • Mackenzie Lake would get on base in the first on a one-out single. She would come home just two batters later, as Peters drilled a two-run home run to left to give Towson a 2-0 lead.
  • After the Eagles scored a run in the third, fourth, and fifth to take a 3-2 lead, Towson answered back in their half of the fifth.
  • Briana Ramirez reached on an error to lead off the inning and would advance to second. After Madyson Peters reached on an error to load the bases, Sydni Byers drove in Ramirez with a sacrifice fly.
  • The game would go to extra innings. Coppin State would score in their half before holding the Tigers in the bottom of the frame to defeat Towson 4-3.
Next Game:
The Tigers will remain at home with a midweek double header against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, March 5. The Tigers and Hawks will play two starting at 1 p.m. at Tiger Softball Stadium.
