TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team fell 12-1 against George Washington Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
George Washington (11-22, 2-4 A-10) got out to an early lead, posting seven runs in the top of the first. Towson (10-23, 2-10 CAA) got on the board with a homer to right field in the bottom of the second. The Colonials scored one each in the third and fourth innings to make it 9-1. GW scored one in the sixth on a single before scoring another on a double to right in the seventh. In the top of the ninth, a dropped fly ball allowed a run to score and no runs to answer made the game to a 12-1 final. In favor of GW.
Key Stats:
- Towson catcher Brian Heckelman was 1-for-3 at the plate with a home run, his fourth of the year. John Cristino picked up a hit in his first game back since March 3 due to injury.
- Towson starter Brett Seils (1-4) took the loss for the Tigers, surrendering seven runs on five hits in the first inning. Towson reliever Cam Clark allowed one hit and an unearned run with two strikeouts in an inning of work.
- GW starter Cade Davis (1-0) recorded the win, allowing one run on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts. GW first baseman Michael Kohn finished 2-for-4 with three RBI at the plate.
How it Happened:
- In the top of the first, a walk and two singles loaded the bases. A ground ball to the pitcher got the first out at home. A single, hit by pitch and walk for the next three batters scored the first runs of the game before a bases-clearing double made it 6-0. A single two batters later made it 7-0.
- In the bottom of the second, Brian Heckelman hit a solo homer to right to put the Tigers on the board.
- The Colonials got on back in the third, scoring on a throwing error after a wild pitch allowed a runner to advance to third.
- GW got one more in the fourth on a single to center field with runners on first and second.
- In the sixth with runners on the corners, a Kohn single scored another to make it 10-1.
- In the seventh, Sam Gates hit a double to the right field wall to post another run for the visitors.
- A dropped fly ball in the top of the ninth allowed the twelfth and final run to score for the Colonials.
