Towson Baseball Falls Against Hofstra in Second Series Game

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University Baseball team fought hard against the Hofstra University Pride on Saturday afternoon, falling short of the mark 7-4 at University Field in Hampstead, New York.

 
The conference matchup between Towson (10-25, 2-12 CAA) and Hofstra (14-19, 8-9 CAA) began with strong defensive play from both sides, with not a single hit in the first three innings from either team. The Tigers were able to score the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly from Bryce Frederick. The Pride responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Towson got the lead in the top of the fifth scoring three more runs, including a homerun from Jordan Peyton. Hofstra then took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs from Bailey and Florides. With two more runs in the sixth and seventh, Hofstra led the game 7-4 and held that score to finish out the matchup. 
 
Key Stats:
  • Jeremy Wagner batted 3-4 in the game today, with one run and one RBI.
  • Towson reliever Shayne Clowar (0-4) took the loss today, pitching for 0.2 innings while allowing three hits and two runs.
  • The Pride's Santino Rosso went 2-4 at the plate today, along with three RBI.
  • Hofstra starter Tristan Nemjo (2-0) got the win today, throwing eight strikeouts and allowing four runs off five hits. 
 
How It Happened:
  • The game started slowly for both teams, with neither team accruing a hit in each of the first three innings.
  • The top of the fourth saw the first offensive action for the Tigers as Casey Bishop doubled to center field, stole third and then scored off a sacrifice fly from Frederick. Hofstra responded with three runs of their own in the bottom frame to make it a 3-1 lead for the Pride, with a two-RBI home run from Santino Rosso.
  • The top of the fifth saw the most offensive action for the Tigers. Right after Jeremey Wagner doubled to right center to score Elijah Dickerson, Peyton homered to left field to score Wagner which took the lead for the Tigers 4-3. The bottom frame saw Hofstra fight back, scoring two runs to make the score 5-4 Pride.
  • The top of the sixth saw strong defensive play from the Pride, only allowing one hit, no runs and leaving two on base for the Tigers. In the bottom of the sixth, Hofstra earned one more run from Morash off a sacrifice fly from Florides.
  • The bottom of the seventh began with Andalo Santangelo relieving Spencer. Hofstra earned the final run of the game in this frame after Rosso singled to left center and scored Dylan Palmer. 
  • Towson got one more hit in the top of the eighth after Frederick reached on a fielder's choice. The Tiger fielders were able to hold the Pride in the bottom frame, leaving two on base to close the inning.
  • The Tigers fought through the end. Dickerson singled to left field and Wagner singled to right, getting two more hits for the Tigers. With one left on base, Hofstra closed out the game with a fielder's choice out at second to win 7-4.

The Tigers will return to University Field for the final game of the series against Hofstra University tomorrow, Sunday, April 16 at 12:00PM.
