TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team posted 18 hits to secure a 20-10 victory over Richmond Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Towson (11-26, 2-13 CAA) opened the scoring with six runs on five hits in the first. Richmond (16-21, 5-4 A-10) answered with a three-run homer to left field to cut the deficit in half. A groundout to second base in the fourth cut the Spider deficit to two. In the home half of the fifth, the Tigers scored five runs on two singles, a sacrifice fly, a ground out and a walk. The Spiders responded with six runs on three hits in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Alden Mathes. In the bottom frame, the Tigers got five back on five hits, most notably
Bobby Spencer and
Reyce Curnane's solo home runs to left field. Curnane hit another solo shot in the seventh for his second of the day. In the eighth, Cristino hit a two-run home run before a walk with the bases loaded brought the Tiger lead to ten runs, enough for a mercy rule victory.
Key Stats:
- Towson first baseman Reyce Curnane batted 4-for-6 with five RBI, four runs scored and two home runs. Left fielder Elijah Dickerson finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored with a double.
- Towson reliever Max Simpson (1-1) recorded the win after allowing six runs (two earned) on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
- Richmond starter Dane Armson (0-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on five hits. Center fielder Alden Mathes finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
How it Happened:
- The Tigers opened the scoring with six runs in the first. Reyce Curnane knocked home the first on an RBI double to left center with runners on first and second. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Dickerson hit a single to left center to score two more. Cristino's single through the right side to follow extended the lead. Bobby Spencer followed with a double to left, bringing the Tiger advantage to five. Jake Lysaght's groundout on the following at bat scored the sixth of the inning for the Tigers.
- Two of the first three Spiders to bat in the third hit singles, followed by a Jordan Jaffe home run to left field to make it a 6-3 game.
- In the top of the fourth, a ground out second base cut it to two.
- Towson posted another big inning in the fifth with five runs scored. First, James Moses walked with the bases loaded. Jordan Peyton's groundout to second base that followed scored another. Curnane followd with a single to right for the third of the inning. Later, a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Wagner and a single through the right side from Dickerson made it an 11-4 game after five.
- Richmond scored six in the top half of the sixth on three hits and two errors. After a single to center scored one, a second was able to get home when the throw went out of play into the dugout. A fielding error to follow made it 11-7. Two batters later, a three-run home run made it a one run game.
- The Tigers answered with five over their own in the home half. Bobby Spencer's home run to left got it started. Later, a double play groundout allowed a run to score, followed by a solo home run from Curnane. Dickerson's double to center and a walk with the bases loaded brought the score to 16-10.
- Curnane hit his second home run of the day in the seventh to make it a 17-10 game in favor of the Tigers.
- In the eighth, Cristino hit a two-run shot to right field to make it a nine-run game. Curnane's walk later in the inning with the bases loaded brought the Tiger lead to 10, enough for a mercy rule win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Elijah Dickerson's four-hit game tied him with Jeremy Wagner for the team lead with 13 multi-hit games this season. Dickerson's current seven game hitting streak is the longest active streak and tied for the third longest on the team this season. His four RBI day gave him sole possession of the team lead in multi-RBI games with seven.
- Reyce Curnane's two home run day was the third multi-home run game from a Tiger this season, matching Bryce Frederick and Cristino. His four runs scored also marks a season high, tied with Frederick and Moses.
- Simpson recorded a career-high five strikeouts on the afternoon after facing 16 batters in relief.
