Towson Softball Clinches Berth in CAA Championship; Tigers Split Double Header at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Towson softball clinched a berth in the 2023 CAA Championships for the first time since 2019 with a double header split at Delaware on Friday afternoon. The Tigers took care of business in game one, 9-0 before falling in the nightcap 2-0.

Towson (24-19, 13-7 CAA) used a six-run first inning in game one to take command early en route to a five-inning win. However, the Blue Hens bounced back in the nightcap, holding the Tigers to just five hits in the loss.

Key Stats – Game One:
  • Cara Bohner led the Tigers with four RBIs, all on a grand slam in the first inning, as she also added a double in the contest.
  • Addie Ferguson drove in a pair of runs with Briana Ramirez going 4-4 from the plate with a double and three singles.
  • Maddie Gardner picked up win number 11 in a complete game shutout. She scattered three hits in the win.
How It Happened – Game One:
  • Towson wasted little time jumping on the Blue Hens early. Briana Ramirez led off with a double that was followed a Cori Jones walk and Mackenzie Lake single to load the bases. Madyson Peters would come up and smack an RBI single to score Ramirez and make it 1-0.
  • Addie Ferguson would get hit by a pitch to score Jones and make it 2-0 early.
  • Cara Bohner would come up and unload the bases with a grand slam to deep right field to give Towson a 6-0 lead.
  • Elizabeth Yoskowitz would keep the Blue Hens off the scoreboard with back-to-back diving catches in left to end the third inning.
  • The Tigers would add another run in the fourth. Yoskowitz would lead off with a bunt single and later score on a Mackenzie Lake RBI single.
  • Ramirez would score on a wild pitch with Lake coming around after an Addie Ferguson RBI double extended the Tiger lead to 9-0.
  • Delaware would threaten in the fourth, but Gardner gets a double play to end the threat.
  • Maddie Gardner would need just four pitches in the fifth to close the door in a 9-0 win.
Key Stats – Game Two: How It Happened – Game Two:
  • Towson would threaten in the second getting Addie Ferguson and Cara Bohner in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the threat.
  • Delaware would take a 1-0 lead after a bases loaded single in the second.
  • Cheyenne Beayon would continue to hold off the Blue Hens, keeping the deficit just 1-0 through the fourth inning.
  • After the Blue Hens added a run in the fifth, Towson would threaten with two outs in the sixth. Madyson Peters would leg out an infield single and go first to third on an Addie Ferguson single. However, a ground out would end the inning.
  • The Tigers would fall in the nightcap, 2-0 setting up an important series finale on Saturday.
