Towson Baseball Drops Final Two of Series Against Monmouth

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team completed game two of the series against Monmouth Sunday afternoon after the game was suspended on Saturday due to inclement weather, falling 21-10. Following the conclusion of the game, the teams faced in the series rubber match, with Monmouth coming away with a 7-6 win in 10 innings at Schuerholz Park in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
 
In the first game, Monmouth (13-22, 4-14 CAA) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings with a sacrifice fly in the first and a three-run home run in the second. Towson (12-27, 3-14 CAA) cut the deficit in half in the third with a solo home run and a single with runners on. The Hawks posted 10 runs on eight hits in the fourth to take hold of the game with a 14-2 lead. The Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom frame on a fielder's choice ground out and a ground ball through the second baseman's legs. A double with runners on first and second plated another for the Hawks in the fifth before a sacrifice fly and wild pitch scored two more. The Tigers cut it to 17-5, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom frame. The Hawks and Tigers exchanged one run each in the sixth, bringing the score to 18-6. A three-run homer in the seventh gave the Hawks a 21-7 advantage before Cristino hit a three-run shot of his own in the eighth. After the game was suspended in the ninth, it was resumed prior to game three today, with a 21-10 final.
 
In the second game, Monmouth (14-22, 5-14 CAA) scored three runs on three hits in the third. Towson (12-28, 3-15 CAA) cut the deficit to one on a solo shot to left and a single up the middle later in the inning. The teams exchanged runs in the fifth. A wild pitch scored one for Monmouth, followed by a single to right center in the home half to make it a 4-3 Hawk advantage. The Tigers answered with three runs on four hits in the sixth to take a two-run lead. A single to right center with a runner on second cut the deficit to one for the Hawks. Monmouth tied the game in the ninth on a single to left field. After no score in the home half of the ninth, the game went to extras. In the tenth, Ben Winstead's home run gave the Hawks a one-run advantage. Towson challenged with a runner in scoring position, but couldn't find grass with the final out coming on a line out to second base.
 
 
Key Stats (Series Game Two):
  • Towson designated hitter John Cristino finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run. Left fielder Elijah Dickerson batted 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Towson starter Brett Seils (1-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits in three innings pitched.
  • Monmouth reliever Stephen Aldrich (1-0) registered the win with one earned run allowed on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Monmouth center fielder Harry Padden batted 3-for-4 with seven RBI and five runs scored in the game.

  • Monmouth took an early lead in the first on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Hawks plated three more in the second on an Andrew Schmid home run to left center field after a single and walk put runners on.
  • James Moses hit a solo home run to right field in the third inning to put Towson on the board. Jeremy Wagner's single to right field cut the deficit in half.
  • The Hawks got ten runs home in the fourth on eight hits with runs scoring on a balk, two doubles, three singles and a three-run home run.
  • The Tigers answered in the home half with a run on a fielder's choice, followed by a ground ball through the second baseman's legs to bring home two more to make it a 14-5 game.
  • In the fifth, Ben Winstead doubled down the right field line to send one home. A sacrifice fly to follow scored the next before a wild pitch allowed one more to come home in the inning.
  • In the bottom frame, Dickerson scored on a wild pitch to make it a 17-6 game.
  • Austin Denlinger's sacrifice fly to center in the sixth extended the Monmouth lead.
  • Dickerson's ground out in the home half of the sixth made it a 18-7 game.
  • With two runners on, Harry Padden hit a home run to left field to give Monmouth 21 runs.
  • In the eighth, John Cristino hit a three-run shot of his own to make it a 21-10 game.
  • The game was suspended with two outs in the top of the ninth inning due to weather and was resumed prior to Sunday's series game three, where it came to a 21-10 final score.

  • Shortstop Casey Bishop batted 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored with a home run.
  • Towson reliever Nate Nabholz (0-1) took the loss with two earned runs allowed on three hits in 2.1 innings. Max Simpson allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with six strikeouts in 3.2 relief innings.
  • Monmouth reliever Alex Barker (3-4) recorded the win with one hit surrendered in 5.0 innings pitched with nine strikeouts. The Hawks' third baseman Matt Scrivanic batted 2-for-5 with an RBI.
 
How it Happened (Series Game Three):
  • The Hawks started the scoring with three runs in the third. A single to left with a runner on second scored one. A double and single to follow scored the next two in the inning.
  • Casey Bishop led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left field Later in the inning with a runner on second, Wagner's single up the middle cut the deficit to one.
  • Monmouth scored one in the fifth on an error on a throw down to third after a wild pitch allowed the runner to advance.
  • Bishop hit a single to right center in the bottom half with a runner on second to keep it a one-run game.
  • The Tigers took a two-run lead in the sixth with a double to right field scoring two before a third scored on a fielder's choice groundout.
  • A pinch runner entered the game for the Hawks after a single, who stole second to get into scoring position. A single to right center allowed that run to score, cutting the lead to one.
  • The Hawks tied the game in the ninth on a single to left field with a runner on second.
  • The Tigers were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras. In the top of the 10th, Ben Winstead hit a home run to right field to give the Hawks a one-run advantage.
  • The Tigers challenged in the bottom frame, getting a runner into scoring position. Cristino hit a hard liner into the Monmouth shift to bring the game to a 7-6 final.

The Tigers return home to John B. Schuerholz Park Tuesday, April 25 for a midweek matchup against Lehigh with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
