Towson Softball Battles to Double Header Split Against Stony Brook

TOWSON, Md. – Towson softball needed a comeback effort in game one to earn a double header split against the Seawolves on Saturday afternoon. Mackenzie Lake led the Tiger offense with two home runs and five RBIs over the two games.

Towson (25-21, 14-9 CAA) moves to 16-6 in games played at Tiger Softball Stadium this season. Head coach Lisa Costello also picked up her 14th conference win, the most in a single season in the CAA in her career.

Key Stats – Game One:
  • Starter Maddie Gardner picked up her 12th win of the season with nine strikeouts, including her 100th of the season in the fourth inning.
  • Mackenzie Lake drove in four runs with a fifth inning grand slam, her lone hit of the game.
  • Ally Hickman was the lone Tiger with multiple hits going 2-3 from the plate with a single and a double.
How It Happened – Game One:
  • The Seawolves got out to a quick start putting a run on the board in the top of the first inning.
  • Both starting pitchers would battle back and forth in the early going. Towson starter Maddie Gardner struck out five over the first four innings picking up her 100th strikeout of the campaign.
  • The Tigers would find their answer in the fifth. After three straight singles from Ally Hickman, Elizabeth Yoskowitz and Briana Ramirez, Mackenzie Lake would come up with two outs.
  • Lake would demolish a grand slam to left field to give Towson a 4-1 lead after five.
  • Ally Hickman added an insurance run with an RBI double in the sixth.
  • Stony Brook would get a pair in the seventh, but Gardner got a strikeout to end the game with a 5-3 win.
Key Stats – Game Two: How It Happened – Game Two:
  • Stony Brook started game two the same way they did game one by scoring in the first inning, this time putting up three runs.
  • The Tigers would get a runner to third in the second inning after a single and an error put Addie Ferguson on third base. However, she would be stranded on base.
  • Both pitchers would retire the opposing side in order in the middle innings.
  • The Seawolves would add four more runs in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Mackenzie Lake would come up in the bottom of the sixth and smash a solo home run to center field for her second home run of the day, cutting the deficit to 7-1.
  • Towson would get a pair on in the seventh, but the Tigers fell in game two 7-1 against the Seawolves.
Next Game:
The Tigers and Seawolves are scheduled to conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m. The team will honor Emma Armstrong and Briana Ramirez post game as part of their Senior Day ceremonies.
