TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team fought their way back into the game with George Mason on Wednesday afternoon, posting seven runs in the bottom of the ninth to snag the 10-8 win from the Patriots at Schuerholz Park.
Towson (10-22, 2-10 CAA) started the matchup against George Mason (15-14, 2-1 A10) with strong defensive play, not allowing a hit in the first three innings. Both the Tigers and the Patriots were able to score one run each in the fourth inning, with a highlight home run from Towson's
Reyce Curnane. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a home run from
Elijah Dickerson, his first of the season. George Mason then took the lead back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs from Carsen Pracht and South Trimble. Towson responded with its own run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game again. George Mason went on to score one run each in the seventh and eighth innings. The Patriots were able to secure three runs in the top of the ninth, leading the Tigers 8-3 heading to the home half. The bottom of the ninth saw seven total runs from Towson, winning the game 10-8 with a walk-off grand slam from
Bryce Frederick.
Key Stats:
- Bryce Frederick finished the day batting 2-for-5 with four RBI and a home run. Reyce Curnane went 2-for-4 batting on the day with two RBI and a 491-foot home run. Elijah Dickerson batted 2-for-4 at the plate today while hitting a home run.
- Towson reliever Andalo Santangelo (1-1) recorded the win, tossing 0.2 hitless innings. Towson starter Justin Rebok (2-1) pitched five innings and accrued four strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits.
- Mason reliever Tyler Herkey (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits. Patriots' South Trimble went 2-for-4 batting today with two RBI and three runs scored.
How it Happened:
- The Tigers started the game strong defensively with three consecutive outs in each of the first three innings with one strikeout from Justin Rebok and no hits allowed. Towson rode the momentum into the batting box, accruing three hits in the first three innings.
- The top of the fourth saw the first offensive action for the Patriots as South Trimble singled to short and advanced to third on a balk and groundout, ultimately scoring on an RBI single from Mark Trotta. Rebok closed out the inning with his second and third strikeouts of the day.
- Curnane's crushing 491-foot home run in the bottom of the inning tied the game at one.
- Rebok struck out his fourth Patriot of the day to end the top of the fifth. In the bottom frame, Elijah Dickerson hit his first home run of the season, giving the Tigers their first of the game. Mason Posey relieved Martins and closed out the inning.
- In the top of the sixth after a double from Carsen Pracht, Trimble soared one over the head of the second baseman for a triple and scored Pracht. Max Simpson came in to relieve Rebok. A sacrifice fly to left center field from Craig Miles scored Trimble for the last run of the inning for Mason.
- The bottom of the sixth saw Brian Heckleman single to third base, advance to second on a wild pitch, advance to third on a ground out from Harper Sy and then score on an RBI single from Bobby Spencer to tie the game.
- With runners on second and third, Trimble took the lead for the Patriots with a ground out RBI in the top of the seventh. Owen Stewart came in for the bottom of the inning at the mound to relieve Posey.
- In the top of the eighth, Simpson struck out Reece Woody before being relieved by Luis Rivera. Brady Powell hit an RBI double to right center field, scoring Trotta to take a 5-3 lead for the Patriots.
- To start the top of the ninth, Cam Clark relieved Rivera. Bennet Shealor singled to short and later stole second. Trimble was walked and Craig Miles singled to short, loading the bases for the Patriots. With bases loaded, Woody doubled down the left field line to score both Shealor and Trimble. Santangelo then came in to relieve Clark. Woody was able to score on a wild pitch for the last score of the inning for the Patriots.
- The bottom of the ninth saw a tenacious fight from the Tigers. Spencer singled to right field, followed by a single to center field from Dickerson. Peyton then was walked, loading the bases with Tyler Herkey coming on to relieve Stewart. Moses was walked by Herkey, scoring Spencer and loading the bases once again. Wagner hit an RBI single to left field to score Dickerson. Curnane was walked the next at-bat to score Peyton. At this point, Britt Yount came to the mound for Herkey. Bryce Frederick pulls out the win for the Tigers, slamming it home for a walk-off grand slam, his second in back-to-back games.
Inside the Numbers:
- The walk-off grand slam from Frederick was his second walk-off home run in consecutive days. He now ranks sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with 33 RBI and seven home runs. He is fifth in the league with 11 doubles and tied for 10th with 38 hits. He now leads the team with six multi-RBI games.
- Jeremy Wagner took the team lead with 12 multi-hit games following a 3-for-5 performance at the plate.
- Curnane picked up his third multi-RBI game in 17 starts this year. He now has four home runs and 16 RBI in those games.
- This marks the first time the Tigers have won back-to-back games on walk-off home runs from the same player in the team's history. The Tigers won back-to-back home games on walk-offs in March of 2021 with a doubleheader on the road in between.
