Timely Hitting Leads Towson Past Elon 7-5 on Wednesday

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y – Towson softball used timely hitting and the second straight complete game for Maddie Gardner in a 7-5 win against Elon to advance in the winner's bracket. Freshman Isabella Canesi drilled her first career home run to distance the Tigers in the seventh.

Towson (28-23) will continue in the winner's bracket against either top seed Delaware or No. 2 UNCW tomorrow afternoon. Six different Tigers recorded a hit and capitalized on three Phoenix errors.

Key Stats: How It Happened:
  • Towson would get on the board in the second. Addie Ferguson led off the inning with a walk. Cara Bohner would step up and nearly hit it out of the park for a double to plate Ferguson to give Towson the lead.

  • Elon would get runners on base in the third and fourth, but Maddie Gardner would get out of the inning unharmed.
  • Towson would get Kristin Toland and Elizabeth Yoskowitz in scoring position in the fourth, but a fly out ended the inning.
  • The Phoenix would tie the game in the fifth on a two-RBI single. That would not last long with Towson retaking the lead the very next half inning. Towson would load the bases on a pair of walks and a single from Ally Hickman.
  • Sydni Byers would give Towson the lead with a bases loaded walk. Briana Ramirez would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly to plate Toland and give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
  • Elon would get a run back, but once again the Tigers had the response.
  • Mackenzie Lake led off reaching on an error after a video review. Madyson Peters followed with a single. Isabella Canesi would add the insurance with her first career home run, this one of the three-run variety, to make it 7-3 Tigers in the seventh.
  • The Phoenix would get a pair on a two-run home run, but Gardner goes the distance in a 7-5 win.
