Tigers Come Up Short in Back-and-Forth Fight at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team fell late 8-5 in a back-and-forth fight Saturday evening in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Delaware.
 
Delaware (25-26, 14-12 CAA) opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run to left field. Towson (17-35, 5-21 CAA) responded with Bryce Frederick's leadoff home run in the second inning to tie the game. The Blue Hens retook the lead with three runs in the bottom frame on two home runs. James Moses' home run in the top of the third made it a 4-2 game in favor of UD. A throw from John Cristino that sailed into center with a runner on second plated one for the Blue Hens in the fourth, extending the lead. The Tigers tied the game at five apiece in the seventh on four hits, highlighted by Casey Bishop's two-RBI infield single. Delaware retook the lead in the home half with three runs on two hits and two walks. The Tigers were unable to scored the necessary runs to extend the game for a 8-5 final.

  • James Moses finished the night 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Casey Bishop was 1-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Towson pitcher Cam Clark (1-3) took the loss in relief, allowing three earned runs on one hit with a strikeout and two walks in 0.2 innings of work.
  • Delaware starter Joey Silan (3-1) recorded the win with five earned runs allowed on eight hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in 7.0 innings pitched. Left fielder Andre Amada went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run.
 
How it Happened:
  • Delaware third baseman Joey Lloynd put the Blue Hens on the board in the first inning on a solo home run to left field.
  • Bryce Frederick answered for the Tigers in the top of the second with a leadoff home run to tie the game at one.
  • In the home half, UD hit a two-run and a solo home run to make it a 4-1 game.
  • Towson center fielder James Moses hit a home run in the third to right field to cut the deficit to two.
  • A throw that sailed into the outfield from catcher John Cristino with a runner on second allowed the runner to reach home to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • With Edem Okpattah on second, Jordan Peyton hit a single up the middle to plate the runner in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to two. After a single from Moses to follow, both runners advanced an extra base on a wild pitch. Casey Bishop legged out a single to short which allowed both runners to score and tied the game at five.
  • In the bottom frame, a single and two walks loaded the bases before Luis Rivera came in to relieve Cam Clark. A sacrifice fly scored one and a wild pitch scored the next. JJ Freeman's single to right center plated the final of the inning to make it 8-5.
  • With the Tigers unable to post anymore runs, the game was final at 8-5.

The Tigers and Blue Hens will return to Bob Hannah Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rubber match of the three-game CAA series.
