TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team fell 9-3 to Stony Brook Thursday afternoon at Schuerholz Park in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
Stony Brook (23-27, 14-14 CAA) posted three runs on four hits in the third, highlighted by Matty Wright's homer to right field. The Seawolves got two more in the next inning on a double and groundout to bring the score to 5-0. Towson (17-37, 5-23 CAA) got on the board with three runs on three hits in the eighth to make it a 5-3 game. SBU was able to plate four more on four hits in the ninth, with a bases-loaded triple clearing the bases for the first three. A pop out in the ninth was the final out for a 9-3 final.
Key Stats:
- Casey Bishop went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Bryce Frederick finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBI.
- Starter Shayne Clowar (0-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3.1 innings pitched. Reliever Bobby Spencer tossed five innings while allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts.
- Stony Brook starter Ben Fero (6-4) recorded the win with three earned runs allowed on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in 7.2 innings. Designated hitter Shane Paradine went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
How it Happened:
- After a walk to lead off the third, Stony Brook got on the board with a home run to right field. Later in the inning a single through the right side with runners on first and second scored another for a 3-0 score.
- After two singles in the fourth, Spencer came on to relieve Clowar. With runners on the corners, Evan Fox's double down the left field line plated a run before a groundout to the pitcher scored another for a 5-0 game.
- Spencer retired 15 of his last 17 batters faced after the double surrendered to his first batter faced.
- The Tigers got on the board in the eighth. After James Moses' double put runners on the corners, Bishop hit a single up the middle to plate Moses. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Frederick hit a single to right field to score two more, making it a 5-3 game.
- After a double, single and intentional walk loaded the bases in the ninth, Paradine's triple to right center cleared the bases to make it a 8-3 game. Later in the frame with a runner on third, Derek Yalon's single to right field scored the run to bring the score to 9-3.
- Peyton's fly out to right in the ninth with a runner on was the final out of the game for a 9-3 final.
