Tigers Post 11 Runs in the Eighth to Take Game Two from Stony Brook

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team put up 11 runs on nine hits in the eighth inning to cement the victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves Friday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.
 
Stony Brook (23-28, 14-15 CAA) started the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Towson (18-37, 6-23 CAA) responded in the home half with a leadoff home run from James Moses to cut the deficit to one. Two doubles in the third scored another for the Seawolves. The Tigers took their first lead of the day in the fifth with three runs on four hits and two errors, highlighted by Cole Stefano's double to left field. Shane Paradine tied the game once again with a home run to left field in the seventh inning. Towson poured it on in the eighth, scoring 11 runs on nine hits and an error in the inning, with home runs from Bryce Frederick, John Cristino and Casey Bishop. Matty Wright hit a home run of his own in the ninth inning to make it 15-5, but the game ended on a strikeout from the designated hitter Paradine.
 
Key Stats:
  • Bryce Frederick went 4-for-5on the afternoon with four RBI, two runs scored and three extra base hits (2 2B, 1 HR). James Moses went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a home run and two runs scored.
  • Towson reliever Nate Nabholz (3-1) recorded the win, surrendering two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Starter Max Simpson went 5.2 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
  • Stony Brook reliever Quinlan Montgomery (0-1) took the loss with four earned runs allowed on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk in one inning pitched.
 
How it Happened:
  • After the first batter reached on an error in the top of the first, Evan Giordano homered to center field, giving Stony Brook the early lead.
  • In the bottom frame, Moses led off with a home run of his own to cut the deficit in half.
  • In the third, a double led off the inning was followed by Derek Yalon's double two batters later to send home the run and make it 3-1.
  • The Tigers took their first lead of the day in the fifth. Jordan Peyton hit a single up the middle with a runner on first, moving him to third before a misplay by the centerfielder allowed the run to score on the error. Cole Stefano followed with a double to left, sending home Peyton. The next batter, James Moses, hit a single to right field. Stefano scored, beating the tag at the plate.
  • Shane Paradine's home run in the seventh tied the game at four apiece.
  • The Tigers piled on runs in the eighth, posting 11 on nine hits. Back-to-back singles from Bishop and Curnane were followed with a three-run home run to right field from Bryce Frederick. After a Jeremy Wagner walk, Cristino hit a surefire home run to left field to extend the lead to five runs. Following a Stefano walk and Moses single, Bishop hit a home run of his own to left center to make it eight in the inning. Curnane tripled for his second hit of the inning before Bryce Frederick knocked him home with a double to right. An errant throw on a ground ball to third allowed Wagner to reach and Frederick to score on the following at-bat. Dickerson then hit a single to center to score Wagner and make it a 15-4 game.
  • Stony Brook got one back in the ninth on Matty Wright's home run to right, but the game ended on a swinging strikeout from the designated hitter Shane Paradine.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • In the single season record books, Bryce Frederick now stands tied for eighth all-time with 56 RBI and ninth all-time with 14 home runs. His RBI total stands third in the CAA while his 14 home runs are tied for fifth.
  • Cristino notched his 13th multi-RBI game this season, taking the team lead in the category.
  • Moses picked up his 20th multi-hit game this season, tying him with Elijah Dickerson for the team lead this season.
  • Towson's four home runs are tied for the most in a game this season, winning all five such matchups.

The Tigers return to Schuerholz Park to face Stony Brook for the final game of the series and season tomorrow, May 20 at 1 p.m. Senior day ceremonies will begin at 12:15 p.m. prior to the game.
